School is off for a one week break, yesterday was my birthday, and I had a relaxing day today. Not so bad!

I had lunch out with my daughter on Friday, and we both chose high protein meals. Mine was a vegetable omelet with a little bit of feta cheese, which really boosts the flavor without the quantity of cheddar cheese typically in an omelet. She chose a vegetable eggs Benedict with pesto sauce and avocado. We shared a bit of each others, and I at my Benedict without part of the English muffin. I forgot about it until I was about half done with the piece I had traded Trista. I am happy to say that I left the fried potatoes alone except for one slice. They tasted good, but not so good that I wanted to eat them all. I think part of the success was due to my daughter's understanding, and her own attempts to eat better. She is not overweight, but she knows she needs to eat more whole grains and more vegetables, so it worked out very well.

We went out for dinner that night, too. I would have liked to spread the food celebration of my birthday out a bit more, but sometimes that is the way it is, and I need to learn how to deal with it. I decided beforehand to limit myself to one portion of each item (we were eating family-style), and I noticed the size of the plate. I decided to make sure there was aclear plate space between my portions of the different foods. I thought if I eat visually I can manage portions when we eat family style as we did at the restaurant. The fish dish was not breaded and had a black bean sauce, It was so good! We had dry sauteed green beans and a spicy hot beef dish. The beef was in thin slices, just barely cooked, and it came with some lovely stir-fried greens. We also ordered sweet and sour pork because my husband loves it - and since we don't go out to eat very often, we did go ahead and order it, and I ate 2 small pieces (probably about the size of a teaspoon each) with just a small amount of sauce on each, not covered with sauce.

Then, we had ice cream!

Yikes, but actually I think mostly it went well. I knew that since it was my birthday there would be a treat at dinner, and I decided to allow myself, and then get back to eating moderately today, and get back to doing my exercises.

I think the big thing for me is that I managed to think about managing portions and the food items throughout, I didn't just forget about it and pig out as I would have done before all the blogging, nutrition entries, exercise, and hearing encouragement from Sparkpeople folks. Progress, in my way of thinking.
