Having fallen off the wagon since the holidays with processed foods, I chose to do the 2 week "white purge" from the South Beach diet, beginning this past Monday. For 14 looonnnng days, nothing but meat, vegetables and fat-free dairy. I really don't mind this (I've done it once before with great success) except at breakfast. I told my husband I was going to start clucking if I have to eat one more egg!
It is difficult to avoid grains (no cereal, no toast, no oatmeal - you get the picture) AND fruit (no fruited yogurt, no juice, no raw fruit) at breakfast. I have alternated a scrambled egg with plain, non-fat yogurt flavored with sugar-free jello and toasted almond slivers added for texture, every other day.
Lunch and dinner are okay. I can pile on the vegetables next to a baked chicken breast, fish, pork, or steak.
The beauty of this is when I complete the 2 weeks - if all goes as the previous time I did it - I will no longer have any desire for the "white stuff." There is absolutely no sense of self-denial regarding bread, white potatoes, corn, desserts, etc. I simply do not want it. I hope the results will be the same as before!
HOWEVER, during this first week, I am madly craving anything with processed flour in it! I think I could just turn up a bag of Pillsbury All-Purpose and funnel it down! Bread is a major weakness of mine, especially if it is served right out of the oven with a pat of butter spread on it. Makes my mouth water to think about it...!
5 days down, 9 to go. I know I can do it. Experience tells me that. I keep reminding myself of the anticipated results, and of the fact that 2 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things.
I'll let you know if the results are as positive as they were the first time. In the meantime, I'll go pluck the little feathers that are erupting from my hair follicles!
