Reflections from this grandma's sleepless night

Saturday, March 23, 2013

What is this?

In a FB post last night,
I see prom pics of my grandson and his date.
I learn that my grandson is engaged????

Okay, so he is 18 years old.
But he's not even out of high school yet.
He has no job.

He still lives with his mom and step-dad,
or, from time to time, the sperm donor dad.

I was 18 and in love once upon a time too.
But things were different then.

Okay, let's fast forward through several hours of stinkin' thinkin'
and the mental gymnastics bouncing around inside my head.

Fast forward to 40+ years from now
to a time when my grandson learns that his grandson is engaged.
Stuf's gonna be a whole lot different then too.....

I guess I am just really out of touch with today's society, morals and values.

It must be time for a ride . . .

I understand. It would have been good of them to share the news with you by phone. Good manners, respect for the individual, and the value of family never go out of style.
My daughter has done similar things - and she is still breaking my heart.

Oh my... That is young. My first thought is that this might have just been a joke. A bad joke albeit, but I have had friends whose kids posted foolish things on their status seemingly just for the reactions. Let's hope that is the case.
If it's not a joke, I am not sure there is much a grandma can do except maybe tactfully try to offer some advice.

OMG... what a way to find out.. He's still a kid.. In this day when even kindergarden kids carry phones, there's no excuse not to call!!

Well, at least he still believes in marriage, in a society that considers all relationships disposable.

What happened to phone calls? It would have been nice to hear in person.

The World is changing for the worse. We can blame our Educators, Collages and Schools for what they our teaching our Children and Adults. And We can Thank Obama and our Government for this. Spread The Wealth, Sign Up for Food Stamps etc. People are becoming dependent on the Government for everything. This is Wrong. We need to Stand on Our Own Two Feet and Be Responsible for Ourselves. Get rid of all the Regulations that is killing jobs Etc. Get people back to work. Live by the Consituation of the United States and Keep Prayer in our Schools and put God back into our country and lives. God Blessings to Everyone. Have a Wonderful Weekend. Take Care. If anyone has something to add or say to this Please let me know. Email Me Please. Thank You Very Much.

Facebook and e-mails are great for a lot of things, but we seem to have forgotten about actual human contact. I hope it comes back someday. As for your grandson, like most kids today, they think it is all fun and games, easy peasy. He will get a wake up call when the rent is due, bills are due, the baby is crying, etc. If he doesn't get an education it will be hard to get a good job. I am going through something similar with my son right now. He's not involved with anyone, but he dropped out of college, has no job and no prospects and has been going from one family members home to another. He doesn't seem to understand that effort equals results. I hope this generation figures it out. : )

I know what you mean. I also find it unfortunate when we get news as important as this in a general post on FB. I prefer the visit and/or phone call for really big news like this from my family. Doesn't always happen now, that is for sure. We still need manners!!

I certainly sympathize! It's so hard to understand them sometimes.... and the world seems to be going crazy now and then.
But you get extra points for dealing with it all with humor!
Hang in there!
