Experience is what you get while looking for something else." Federico Fellini
I became a Spark member over four years ago. I was lonely overweight with a pacemaker and heading to 50 years of age. My daughter Sara found this place and told me it was free.
So I started reluctant and a little scared, I would find some weight loss tips , maybe learn to eat healthier. Boy what a surprise was I in for.
First I set up my page with my daughters help I hardly knew how to use a computer .Typing took me forever because I could only use one finger at a time.
I noticed on other peoples pages they had friends and teams. So I went and joined some teams , and slowly acquired some friends.
Later I noticed some people were blogging ,about anything under the sun so I dabbled it that too.
Surprises I encountered that got me to today.
I have 80 friends today from all over the world. they all eat differently, all exercise differently, but we all support each other day and night. My life is ever so much richer with you guys . I have also been touched by many others along the way and am sure more will come.
I have found that if I log on here and don't feel much like exercising ,someone's blog will inspire me to get it done. Or a spark tape will show up to lead the way. I can learn about Zumba or taebo or tae chi without ever having to try them out. The community boards give me great ideas.
My teams always have some new challenge going on , to blog everyday , or exercise streaks . I can learn how to save money at the grocery store. We can share our favorite books or ideas about our favorite shows. People my age can tell me about life's up and downs and how diseases affect them.
This year I became a co-leader to a team and a leader in another that had no leader. It keeps me logging in here everyday. It makes me realize that people are counting on me .My teams matter to me they have helped with my self esteem .Taught me some new computer skills . It only takes a half hour a day and what a great half hour it is it so enriches my life. I would recommend being a co-leader to everyone it is such a great experience.
I found the new spark recipes feature that has been so helpful with my weight loss journey. In the summer when we had a ton of zucchini left from the garden I found a million ways to use it. I am now not only healthier, but now I am a better cook.
I started out slowly with blogging at first just writing about my life experiences. But although I was getting great feed back from my fellow sparkers , I felt I wasn't contributing to their weight loss and well being as much as I could. So this year I found a book of quotes. "Positive Quotes for Every Day by Patricia Lorenz". This is where I get my inspiration to write .I take her daily quote and try to fit it into something people from sparkpeople can learn from and add my spin to it. That way I am not just blogging , but growing and expanding too.
I love to get feedback from others and their take on the quotes and what they mean to them in their weight loss journey.
I have lost some weight but that is not what makes me the happiest. I have found friends and acceptance here . I can learn and grow here. I feel safe and secure here there are few bullies. I am a better cook, friend, mother and wife all because of what I learned from the great people here and my friends. I am not afraid to try new things and new challenges I am more open to change. My life has a purpose to help others and they have helped me.
The world is full of unexpected surprises. Look at each new opportunity with open eyes. You may think you are going to learn one thing but walk away learning something way more valuable.
