Enter Colonel Kurtz

Friday, March 22, 2013

I'd like to say that life has been so busy that I haven't been able to participate on Spark, but truthfully, I haven't been making my fitness much of a priority lately. I haven't gained any weight so I'm writing it off as a maintenance break and I'm gearing up to get rededicated to loss.

For those of you that have been following my roller derby progress. I became a Burning River Roller Girl at the end of January and have been skating with my league's farm team, The Pyromaniacs, since. I'll be skating in my first public bout this Saturday against the Border City Brawlers from Windsor. Super excited.

To add to my excitement, my league held a draft yesterday, and I was drafted to the Hellbombers! It's the team I was hoping for, though, I would have been grateful to anyone that took me on. :)

I had to change my derby name from Sarah Skinjob because our committee deemed it as "too vulgar" which amuses me since it's nothing vulgar, at all! I landed on Colonel Kurtz, like in Apocolypse Now because my last name is really Kurtz and it fits a military theme along with my number, N7. Plus, I can skate around screaming, "The horror!"

Anyway, if anyone has any pro-tips for my first bouting experience, please lay it on me. Also, I've been having some ouch in my right ankle - mostly friction related - and had purchased EZEEEFIT? ankle things. They seem to help avoid blisters but my ankle was a bit swollen after practice last night. HELP! I don't want to be injured just as I'm getting started!

We lost, but I found out after that we were playing an A team vs our B/C team that had literally one practice together. We held our own pretty well the first half, but it got brutal in the second half. I had fun for the most part. I can be hard on myself, so of course, I wish I would have done better. Also, we didn't really have an after-party. I think the home team bouts are going to be better! Definitely more organized and we even have a set after-party location! :)

Thank you, lady face! I'll definitely look into gaskets and taping my stupid jerk ankle. It's not sprained or anything. It just RUBS weird.

    knee gaskets = invaluble!!!

I don't really tape my gear on unless its old or ill fiting in some way. Keneso Tape actually tapes your skin and joints in a way that protects them in some highly scientific way that my smart teammates all swear by. I usually don't bother unless something (like my knee) is giving me a lot of trouble.

It's going to be super small production at a local roller rink! Total, B/C team mash-up. Send me the pinterest link?

Also, should I consider taping my gear on? I've heard that. I'm also considering getting knee gaskets eventually.

Noooooo!!! Skinjob is a GREAT name.

    Here are some bout tips:
Make sure you eat very healthy up until the bout is over.
    Hydrate your face off.
Get plenty of sleep the night before.
Don't be nervous, just play your best.

Do you have a team doctor who can help you kineseo tape your ankle? If not I have a pinterest link on how to DIY.
I'm sure you won't be thinking about it during the game because you'll be on such an adrenaline high... but protecting yourself from injury is key.

Is the bout being streamed online?!?! I wanna watch!
