That was scary...

Friday, March 22, 2013

Took my girls out for sushi last night, which is one of my favorite foods in the whole world. But as we were driving back home, my throat began to feel sore and tight and the inside of my mouth to burn, and I realized that something in the sushi we ate was cross-contaminated with shrimp or lobster.

I can eat any seafood or shellfish except shrimp and lobster, but those two definitely cause me problems. Fortunately, I recognized it right away and we were almost home. I took 4 Benadryl, and then an hour later two more, and an hour after that one more. I was a little loopy, but it managed the symptoms, and today I'm fine.

Still, from now on when I order sushi I will definitely mention the allergy issue and make sure the chefs don't cross-contaminate!

You can't get a break this year can you? Maybe you should write a blog about all the good things that have happened this year just to help balance out the craziness.

I have a nut allergy that does that. I carry an epipen, but I can tell if the attack is epipen worthy... when I'm fairly certain I'm going to be OK, I load up on the benadryl but I also gargle with very, very salty warm salt water. (Like a 1/4 cut salt to 10 oz water - I've never measured, but that seems about right.) Also, if you can get the capsules of benadryl, you can break them and pour the little rolly-tablets under your tongue for faster release.

Still, you need to carry an epipen because you never, ever know what it is going to be the time that could kill you.

That's scary. And that's a lot of Benadryl. Do you have an Epi Pen? You may want to talk to your doctor about getting one.

Benadryl puts me out. I'd never make it past the first dose! I'm glad you were onto the allergic symptoms and took fast action!
