Cure for a stiff neck?

Friday, March 22, 2013

Better yet, what are the causes? I was walking through the Botanical Garden yesterday evening with my husband, having a great time, when the right side of my neck and shoulder just stiffened up. No warning, and no clue why. I took off my purse and carried it in both hands to see if maybe I had just left it on that shoulder too long, and it made no difference. I stretched, I breathed into it, I did neck and shoulder rolls... Nada.

When we got home, I continued to give my shoulder attention with stretches and rubbing. I laid down very carefully, positioning myself squarely on my pillow so my neck and shoulder would be properly cradled. I woke up 14 times last night - every time I tried to reposition, I woke up from the pain in this darn stiff neck.

What gives? I've been good all week - hitting the gym, eating responsibly, staying active while at work... I have no clue what made my neck and shoulder muscles suddenly stiffen like that. Heating pad, 2 Ibuprophen, and Bengay later, I'm able to work on my computer without too great discomfort, but this just will not do. I like to feel good, not just make it.

In other news - I've been way up on my step counts, and so has my husband! I love the change the Fitbit is giving him.

Please if it doesn't get better have it checked. It can be so many things and over use. My neck gets very sore from my purse and winter coat it bothers my arthritis. My other horrible story is I lost a lot of weight and was exercising and I thought the funny feeling in my arm was from a pinched nerve from over use traveling from my thumb to elbow. hey what do I know I convinced myself I was leaning on it to much and sleeping on it to make it pins and needles from lack of blood. I was in my early 40's. Turns out it got so bad I got it checked the pain was so bad I looked like I aged 30 years over night. My discs in neck fell apart. I had surgery and all better now. But I wish I would have taken it easy and had it checked before I made it so bad I needed surgery. Don't worry to me it sounds like over use and maybe if you use a lap top it's from holding your neck down to see it. Oh mine is from degenerative discs and they have done my back. My mom's side of family is in their 80's they live long and are healthy except for the bad backs. LOL Good luck and glad to hear you took it easy It sounds like that was a great idea!
