Dispatch from flyover country: Lamar CO

Thursday, March 21, 2013

It was cold again this morning. Not as cold as yesterday in Ulysses, but cold nonetheless. And it felt colder.

Today, I ran a 2 minute run/ 1 minute walk. pattern and improved on yesterday's time by 10 minutes. I finished right before 9:30. And that is important.

Here's why.

I have a 2:40 CDT flight on Friday. It is 151 miles from Clayton NM where our final race is tomorrow. AS it happens, our Lamar Race was also 151 miles from the Clayton venue. So as soon as I was done, I hopped in the car and drove as fast as I dared (speed limit + 9 mph) stopping to fill the tank ( I will have to do that on Friday) and once to take a picture of the New Mexico sign ... to simulate the pee break I will likely need tomorrow but didn't need today.

Welcome to New Mexico indeed.

I arrived in Clayton at 12:05 MDT (1:05 CDT). Excellent time, I figured that for a 2:40 flight, I *should* arrive at 12:40 but that is not happening. 1:30 on the outside. And I had plenty of time. So I might be able to push my half to a 9:45 finish and still feel good about my timing.

But it's going to be close. Even so, I will complete 5 races in 5 states in 5 days. And not feel like I killed myself.

And here are pictures of the venue. It's really pretty.
