Four months ago I began taking a daily supplement, Chinese red yeast rice, to lower my cholesterol.
Previously, I had experienced some cognitive side effects from both Lipitor and Crestor, so I was trying something new under the direction of my primary physician. My physician specializes in women's medicine, treats older patients, and believes in using nutritional remedies when appropriate.
She recommended that I buy the red yeast rice capsules from a company that creates 'prescription level' supplements. Supposedly, the supplements are manufactured to the same standards of quality as prescription medications.
It took me a while to learn to take the supplement with food - or else I would experience heartburn. Otherwise, I was not aware of any other side effects.
This week is when I received the results of the blood tests after taking the supplement for four months - and I learned that the red yeast rice supplement did, indeed, lower my cholesterol from the 250s to 190.
I plan to continue using it.
