I Have A Diagnosis!

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I had my long awaited neurology appointment today. I have carpal tunnel in both wrists and something going on in my neck. Possibly a pinched nerve, but I'm getting an MRI done to make sure it's nothing with my disks.

My main complaint was elbow pain that was waking me up at night along with hand numbness. The Dr poked and prodded my elbow and nothing he did hurt or made my hand go numb. I told him I was embarrassed that I was seeing him and nothing was hurting right now. Well, then he thumps me on the inside of the wrist and I about flew through the ceiling. And he said "yep, it's carpal tunnel". I told him I did not understand how carpal tunnel could affect my elbows--- my OT said they are not connected. The neuro said that in 7-8% of people with CT the pain is in the elbows, NOT the wrists. I guess I am in the minority! He also told me CT is what will wake you up at night. He named several other things that cause numbness and said they do not wake you up at night.

They did the EMG where they shocked me up and down my arms and legs. OUCHIE! That showed most definite and obvious carpal tunnel. Then the Neuro. did the test where he poked me with needles up and down my arms and legs. That's where he noticed something going on with my neck. He said possibly a pinched nerve, but was going to order an MRI to make sure it's nothing else. I've never had an MRI before so not sure what exactly this will show???

He is ordering a carpal tunnel release in both wrists. He seemed to make it sound like no big deal. He said they do them laproscopicly and you are in and out in a short time wearing a Band-Aid. I hope he is right! I want to get this fixed and be done with pain.

I am just so glad they found something! And I am not just being a big baby, lol. I had a few people make comments to me like "oh I get that all the time" or "it's just part of getting older".... grrrr.... Waking up several times a night with severe pain is not a normal part of life!

I loved the Dr I saw! He was so warm and so open and personable. He listened to me, asked questions, and did not rush me at all. That doesn't happen too often.

I am doing good this week with my eating!!!! YAY! I think I may hold off until April 1st to weigh-in. Hopefully I will be back in the lower 130's, closer to my ideal weight. Not sure what to do with my exercise... Def. going to slow down, but not sure how much.

    Hi Helen
So glad they found a diagnosis and now I hope they can get you fixed up.
The MRI can show in great detail all the nerve roots in you cervical spine and if anything is being compressed or pinched and to what extent. It will take about 1/2 an hour and is better at looking at soft tissue and disks than a CT or xray. (I am an MRI Technologist)
Good luck and I hope you are feeling better soon!

Thank God that you got a diagnosis AND a great doctor! I know it stinks to have to wind down on the exercise, but you are a tough little lady! Once you get the necessary surgeries and recover, I know that you will bounce back. Great job sticking to a healthy diet and taking care of yourself!

My youngest daughter just had her second carpal tunnel surgery done on her hand. They did the other one about Thanksgiving time and then the second one done just yesterday. Good success with the first one and expecting the same results with this one.
