Day 40 - New ideas for running pain relief!

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I get my fair share of aches and pains from running (shins, ankle, knee, hip)... nothing serious, and usually not in the same spot each time... but it happens. One acronym that is very familiar to runners is R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation); I have been using ice packs and ace bandages... which are GREAT, but I have discovered a few great new tools for post-run recovery...

Sombra Cool Therapy Natural Pain Relieving Gel Roll-On.
It really helps!!!! I just roll it onto whatever hurts, and wrap it up with an ace bandage. It's a great cooling sensation and instantly soothes whatever is irritated. Plus, it smells good and has great ingredients.

Active Ingredients: Menthol, USP 6.0%
Inactive Ingredients: Aloe Vera Extract, Carbomer, Decyl Polyglucose, Deionized Water, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Green Tea Extract, Lemon Peel Extract, Queen of the Prairie Extract, Rose Water, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Vegetable Glycerin, Witch Hazel, Yucca Extract.

And then, there's this:

The Cryocup. You just freeze it, then massage it onto whatever hurts (hello, shins!). It's cheap, and you don't waste freezer space on bulky ice packs. I always put mine in a heavy-duty ziplock bag to avoid the ice melting all over my couch, lol.

(No I am not being paid for these endorsements, lol. I just thought my Sparkfriends might be interested!)

How do you deal with post-run aches and pains?

I like a product called Biofreeze. Sombra also makes a heat gel. A homeopathic rub I also like is called Natural relief 1222. Epsom salts with olive oil and a few drops of peppermint oil makes a great foot rub/exfoliant.

Oh, that would really help my back pain. I have scoliosis, so exercise can be painful sometimes. I love to take epsom salt baths.

Epsom salt soaks really help me. It's inexpensive and easily available, and it's especially nice to soak in a tub of hot water after running in the cold.
