The cost of privilege
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
So much that we take for granted: lucidity, mobility, overall health, family, friends, shelter. For those who happen to read this post, you may be facing challenges in one of these areas. I recognize in myself that I have a large dose of "pay it forward" to offer to those unseen people who have used their talents to level the playing field.
In anticipation of the International Day for the Elimination of Racism (March 21), I will be devoting quiet time to acknowledge those who sacrificed to advance causes of social justice. I will take the time before I respond to others to truly listen -- not just to the basic requests, but to the sub-text that asks to be given credit for being human. I will realize that, because of moments of choice, I am in the position of privilege: I can and must pay it forward in humility, in quiet. That is the cost of privilege.
