Week 12 – Reflection

I thought it was a good idea to reflect on my journey. (The whole story is on my sparkpage so there is no need to write it all again. Feel free to read it there.) For what I can remember, I’ve always struggled with my weight growing up. I have memories of eating lunch with other fat kids and the school nurse and her teaching us how to eat better. Can you say embarrassing? I went on numerous diets and is everyone else’s story here on spark. The highest weight that I know of was 214lbs and that is what I was when I started my final journey on 1997. It took me 1 year but I lost 65lbs and hit 149lbs. It seemed that my goal is life was to weigh 150lbs. I was able to maintain that and if I gained a few pounds I was able to lose it fairly easy.
Then around 2000 I started to experience some tummy issues and no doctor could figure out what was going on. I slowly put on weight and no matter what I did I couldn’t get less than 160lbs. Frustrating yes. I felt like I was banging my head against the wall. I was doing everything right and eating all the rights foods and working out like crazy and nothing. Well life went on and I got married in 2008 and weighed 162.5lbs and then had my first baby in 2009 and gained 42lbs (pre-baby 173lbs) and lost all the baby weight in 10 months and then had baby #2 in 2011 and gained 30lbs (pre-baby 170lbs) and lost that baby weight in 13 months.
In 2012, I saw a Registered Dietitian, as I was explaining to her my issues and concerns she had a reassuring look on her face. She told me that it sounds like I may have food allergies or sensitive’s and was correct. Once I addressed those issues, it took about 3 months and the weight started coming off. Slowing but surely I was making my way toward my goal. It’s funny because in my SMART Goal my goal was to get to 160lbs (starting weight in Aug 2011 was 190.5) and then see how realistic was for me to hit 150lbs which was my ultimate dream goal.
Well I hit 150lbs in Feb and have basically been maintaining for 1.5 months. I changed my ultimate goal to 145lbs because I want don’t want to weigh over 150lbs so I needed a cushion on 5lbs but it will probably be more like a 3lb cushion.
Yes I have ups and downs but when I look at the total picture, I have come a long long way and I learned a ton about healthy eating and fitness. I know that this is a lifetime journey and I'm totally in it for the long haul. I have every confidence that I will hit 145lbs. It might take longer than I thought to get there but this is the time when I learn strategies that will help me keep the weight off forever.
