Today I am grateful for . . . and a positive event

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Day 1 of 21 days of gratitude and positivity:

Today I am grateful for . . .

the great big hug my husband gave me when I got home from work,
having great coworkers who have got my back and believe in the power of education,
and
having steady work in a time of economic troubles where I live.

Positive event for the day:

L, one of my Spanish as a Foreign Language students, came to my upper level course for immigrants today. As he was the only student we got to have a very interesting conversation about his country Senegal. He really opened up and shared a lot about traditional medicine and beliefs that coexist with the Islamic faith in his region. I really felt a connection and it was great to get to know him more. He expressed gratitude that I was interested in finding out more about his country, and willing to listen to him. It is nice to be able to lend a sympathetic ear, especially when many of my Senegalese students are undocumented migrants who have lived through often terrible conditions to make it here.

Exercise:

Pilates, Exercise bike, walk: total of 55 minutes

Meditation:

Will be doing after this post and before getting into bed.

Random acts of kindness:

1. I told my friend Maite that I think her daughters are amazing.
2. I sent an email to one of my cousins back home.
3. I lent a coworker a book of "redneck" jokes by Jeff Foxworthy, since he keeps talking about the course on redneck English that he is taking online!

I wish I could have been in on that wonderful conversation! I don't think I know anyone from Senegal! So wonderful that you were able to connect in such a meaningful way!
