Opinions on fasting?

I'm looking for opinions on fasting. My fiance' is frustrated with his weight and wants to fast next week (Monday-Friday). I've read articles and I know that most people and sparkpeople say fasting is not helpful and can be unhealthy.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has used fasting or limiting yourself to fruit/veggies for a week as way to reset, focus on what your eating, maybe break some bad habits.

He wants to take vitamins and only drink water. I know that a lot of weight lost when people fast is water weight so if you drink a lot of water while fasting would that keep you from losing water weight?

I did this fast once when I was younger where I ate only fruit/veggies for two days, then I fasted for two days, and then the two days after the fast were only fruit/veggies again. I don't remember if I lost any weight, but I know I didn't make it my last day with only fruit and veggies cuz my family was having pizza and I was too tempted.

He also mentioned the spiritual benefits of fasting which I totally agree with and I think if he spends the week focusing on reading his Bible and praying, even if he doesn't lose weight he'll be better off.

Anyway I suggested maybe doing somehting like that. I could see it as being a good way to really focus on what you put it your body and maybe break habits of eating bad things.

I don't know? Opinions anyone?

    For me, I don't fast because I am worried about how sick I could get from not getting the required nutrients, especially when I'm exercising. I get dizzy spells, headaches, crankiness, etc. if my blood sugar gets too low (and I am not even diabetic). Additionally, I find it very hard to think and concentrate. As an educator, we are taught that if humans' basic needs (food, water, shelter, etc) are not being met, his or her mind will not be able to function at full capacity.

    I agree with Sally that I have read you can go into starvation mode and block your own weight loss efforts too.

    I agree that eating really healthy foods and whole foods is an awesome step. When I switched to eating more whole foods in correct calorie ranges and drank enough water every day I dropped like 6 pounds! No Joke!

    For me, I don't fast because it's too easy for me to NOT eat. If you're doing it for spiritual reasons, then I don't see a problem with it, I do however think fasting just for weight loss can sometimes be dangerous because you like the weight loss that comes, so you want to do it more and more. But then you risk sending your body into starvation mode. The fruit and veggies one sounds good to me though cause I love fruits and veggies! :)
