It happens about three times a year at the same location, same time of day. We get together with an old college buddy or two of DH's. Today was it... luncheon at Olive Garden at 11:30 and lasting until about 2:30. My husband likes to try out the new things on the menu. So he and his friend of sixty-three years had the dinner-for-two special: appetizer of calamari and bruschetta, seafood lazagna, and of course the breadsticks and endless salad. I settled for the usual zuppe e insalate: minestrone (which I limited to one bowl) and again endless garden fresh salad (I had three servings) and two garlic bread sticks. Even though I didn't join them with the yummy looking appetizer, my caloric intake was way above the usual! Then we topped it off with dolcini: one for each of us...amareto tiramisu, strawberry and white chocolate and dark chocolate mousse complete with the staff singing happy birthday to our friend.
Yup, I'll "pay for" this "free" day,* but it was worth sharing again over a good Italian meal. This is the thing...a life time of knowing that the way to get good conversation going is to sit around the table together, right?...Right! At home DH and I can do that over carefully crafted menus that meet the caloric limits as well as provide all the healthy nutrition we're supposed to be having now. Our friend does the same kind of thing usually. But put us together and the old patterns take over for awhile. Well, not the beer drinking or even wine imbibing anymore. Not the huge plates of pasta with sauces, meats and cheeses. Not the uncounted cookies and brownies either. This was a restrained "remember the good old college times".
I'm the "outsider" as I didn't meet the college "buds" until 1965. But forty-six years does qualify me to join in and listen to the stories. And contribute a few of my own, too.
* Good thing I did tap practice this morning and had dance class tonight!
