This evening I did my 2nd 3K in two days. Wow! And how different can two adjacent days be? Yesterday was gorgeous! Warm temps and sunny, 50 at race time. Today, not so much! 37 at race time and it had been raining, snowing and sleeting within 30 minutes of start time!
Why would I subject myself to this torture? I had a perfectly fine race against my year old time... set myself a new PR, too. Well, I was being supportive of a friend. I've known Scott for a really long time and we've both struggled with weight issues. He's diabetic. Earlier this year I talked him into beginning a Couch to 5K program and then pestered him to do a race in the city we work. Frankfort is halfway between where I live in Lexington and where he lives in Lawrenceburg. They have a trifecta of a 3K, 5K and 10K about a month apart for each. I was sure he could do it and would enjoy the feeling of accomplishment.
So, here I was (very glad it was not raining) run/walking a 3K with several hundred other crazy people! Scott did great! In fact, he beat me by quite a lot...22:11. So, there I was supporting him from behind! But, he is almost 20 years younger, after all.
But I now have a new 3K PR - 25:47! Don't know how - my hamstring was hurting from about the 1/2 mile point on. I felt I was surely slower, even with my Garmin. It was chip timed and I verified the distance on both my Garmin and my iPhone app.
We did so well, that I'll will be supporting my friend from behind at the 5K race next month! Let's go, support our friends! Help them reach their goals and they will reciprocate.
