Celebrate, Resonate, Vibrate!!! God is in the details! (Reprisal)

Sunday, March 17, 2013

I’ve been trying to find the time, at the very least, to post an update so that you won’t all think I fell off the earth once again (I AM okay… doing what I need to do for myself, and the good of my family… peeking in on all of you as time allows… and fighting dragons in between)… but today has a different, and I believe more important purpose.

God is in the details, and today is a day to revel in miracles and joy and faith. Today is a day to celebrate and resonate and vibrate with LIFE, and newness in the gift of life (even though there is a blizzard outside my window). Green is the colour of all of these and, interestingly enough, green has become my favourite colour over the last thirteen years.

From the time I first became aware of the possible existence of ‘four-leaf’ clover, I wanted to find just one leaf. Every chance I had, I searched. …Not because I believed the finding of one would bring me luck, but because the looking reminded me that treasures honour those who journey in faith.

I’d been looking, and doing my best to honour this particular part of my faith journey, for more than thirty years. In all that time, I’d never even seen the suggestion of one such leaf. Thirteen years ago, at Candle Lake (I don’t believe the illumination was a coincidence), in the space of five minutes, I found six! I’m sure there were more, but I didn’t want to be greedy, LOL!

I picked them (I needed proof that they could be found) and I pressed them (I needed to honour their existence) and made them into bookmarks (I needed to remember the moment of discovery and what it meant to me)… to mark other important discoveries born of faith and promise… I keep the one I kept for myself in my Bible.

Now, I ponder the finding, and why God may have chosen that moment to inspire me (the first summer I was married... maybe it was because I was walking in the woods for the last time with my dearest Irish friend), to reassure me of His attention to my smallest desires, and to challenge me to journey ever more vigilantly – because, to tell the truth, while I’ve always looked, I've not always trusted that I’d find…
...what I needed,
…what I longed for,
…the truth,
…the way,
…or the life I am called to.

I have pondered those precious leaves many times since:
…when I got pregnant against all reason and possibility
…when that baby was taken away from me before I could even hold it
…when my arms ached with emptiness and longing
…when a new baby found her way into that emptiness against all reason and possibility
…when illness and death and struggle have surrounded me on every side
…when it feels as though Spring can never be again
…when my daemons howl and rail in the stillness of the night
…when momentum is kicked out from under me, like a three-legged stool on an uneven floor, by boots with no care for civility or dignity or good manners
…when I am lost, or weary, or simply indifferent

…And my faith is refreshed, renewed, and invigorated. I cease to see the forest debris, and see again the shining green of hope, and promise and possibility.

This day (and every day), in the symbol of the Shamrock, I acknowledge the faithfulness of my God in all the details of my life.

I bind myself
to the strong virtue of Love,
and the obedience of angels,
and the service of archangels,
and the prayers of patriarchs,
and the prediction of prophets,
and the preaching of the apostles,
and the faith of confessors,
and the innocence of holy virgins,
and the deeds of righteous men.

GOD'S STRENGTH will pilot me
GOD’S WISDOM will guide me,
GOD’S MIGHT will uphold me,
GOD’S POWER will teach me,
GOD’S EYE will watch over me,
GOD’S EAR will hear me,
GOD’S WORD will give me speech,
GOD'S HAND will guard me,
GOD'S WAY lies before me,
GOD'S SHIELD will protect me,
GOD'S HOST will save me.

Christ be with me,
Christ within me,
Christ behind me,
Christ before me,
Christ beside me,
Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ in quiet,
Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind myself, today, to the strong virtue of Christ.
Amen.

(Adapted from the prayer known as "Faeth Fiada", or the "Lorica (Breast-Plate) of St. Patrick" just below...)

“I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through the belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness
Of the Creator of Creation.

“I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with his baptism,
Through the strength of his crucifixion with his burial,
Through the strength of his resurrection with his ascension,
Through the strength of his descent for the judgment of Doom.

“I arise today
Through the strength of the love of Cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In the service of archangels,
In hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In prayers of patriarchs,
In predictions of prophets,
In preaching of apostles,
In faith of confessors,
In innocence of holy virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

“I arise today
Through the strength of heaven:
Light of sun,
Radiance of moon,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of wind,
Depth of sea,
Stability of earth,
Firmness of rock.

“I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me:
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's host to save me
From snares of devils,
From temptations of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone and in multitude.

“I summon today all these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel merciless power that may oppose my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.

“Christ to shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me abundance of reward.

“Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

“I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness,
Through confession of the oneness,
Of the Creator of Creation.

...And because, more often than not, this place has become the repository for much of my journey that I hold dear… A MORE POETIC VERSION:

I bind unto myself today
The strong Name of the Trinity,
By invocation of the same,
The Three in One and One in Three.

I bind this day to me for ever.
By power of faith, Christ's incarnation;
His baptism in the Jordan river;
His death on Cross for my salvation;
His bursting from the spicèd tomb;
His riding up the heavenly way;
His coming at the day of doom;
I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself the power
Of the great love of the cherubim;
The sweet 'well done' in judgment hour,
The service of the seraphim,
Confessors' faith, Apostles' word,
The Patriarchs' prayers, the Prophets' scrolls,
All good deeds done unto the Lord,
And purity of virgin souls.

I bind unto myself today
The virtues of the starlit heaven,
The glorious sun's life-giving ray,
The whiteness of the moon at even,
The flashing of the lightning free,
The whirling wind's tempestuous shocks,
The stable earth, the deep salt sea,
Around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today
The power of God to hold and lead,
His eye to watch, His might to stay,
His ear to hearken to my need.
The wisdom of my God to teach,
His hand to guide, His shield to ward,
The word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.

Against the demon snares of sin,
The vice that gives temptation force,
The natural lusts that war within,
The hostile men that mar my course;
Or few or many, far or nigh,
In every place and in all hours,
Against their fierce hostility,
I bind to me these holy powers.

Against all Satan's spells and wiles,
Against false words of heresy,
Against the knowledge that defiles,
Against the heart's idolatry,
Against the wizard's evil craft,
Against the death wound and the burning,
The choking wave and the poisoned shaft,
Protect me, Christ, till Thy returning.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the Name,
The strong Name of the Trinity;
By invocation of the same.
The Three in One, and One in Three,
Of Whom all nature hath creation,
Eternal Father, Spirit, Word:
Praise to the Lord of my salvation,
Salvation is of Christ the Lord.

AMEN.

...and a simpler, more personal version... because what a heart knows by heart, IS what a heart knows!

An Irish Prayer

As I arise today,
may the strength of God pilot me,
the power of God uphold me,
the wisdom of God guide me.
May the eye of God look before me,
the ear of God hear me,
the word of God speak for me.
May the hand of God protect me,
the way of God lie before me,
the shield of God defend me,
the host of God save me.
May Christ shield me today.
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me,
Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit,
Christ when I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
Amen.

"He was a terror to any snake that came in his path, whether it was the cold, slimy reptile sliding along the ground or the more dangerous snake that oppresses men through false teachings. And he drove the snakes out of the minds of men, snakes of superstition and brutality and cruelty." ARTHUR BRISBANE

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” EPHESIANS 6:10–17
