My Surprising Benefit from Exercise

Saturday, March 16, 2013

I happened to test my resting heart rate today; first time since the first day of my diet about 2 and a half months ago. I consistently came in between 80-100 before, and I was super surprised to find that my heart rate was 68 today. It seems logical, but being so obsessed with the scale and the measuring tape I never stopped to think of other indications of success.

Lately I have been feeling bummed because I haven't lost as much weight or inches as I'd like thus far, but this shows that even though this process can be painfully slow at times it still has positive effects that we may not think of or notice. A good motivation to keep going and not give up just because the scale doesn't work with me every week.

Note: This whole deal came to light because I was playing around with an app on my new phone. I downloaded a heart rate monitor and checked, and it was so low I checked the real way a couple times; was surprisingly accurate. If any of you would like the app it's called 'Instant Heart Rate' on Android, but it's probably on IOS as well. I have the free version and it worked just fine.

That's another great indicator of your health! I have been annoyed that my scale isn't moving, but inside i've just kept getting healthier. My blood pressure is low/normal now instead of borderline medication/high...

Keep going and getting healthier! emoticon

I think the weight is the last thing that will get any positive change. So, the best non-scale victories that you can look at are how's your mood, your clothes, the ease of doing non-exercise activities (especially going up stairs), how well do you sleep, how do you hold yourself from overeat, etc etc :D

Will try find that aps "Instant Heart Rate" for my Android phone :D

I'll have to see if apple has an app like that, what a neat thing. Wish I knew what my resting heart rate was b4 starting to work out consistently but it would still be great to see what it is now. Thanks for sharing!
