Holy Moly! Max Roach and Art Blakey are extraordinary! It looked like Elvin Jones had something to say, too ... Thanks for sharing that.

PBS had an awesome mini-series called Jazz that explored the dynamics of race and music. The racism was horrendous, great musical geniuses and humanitarians like Satchmo would amaze whites in hotels and venues that they weren't even allowed to enter the front door of. For a long while white bands could not have black members, even though the jazz they were playing was mere echos of the true black jazz. But after hours they would get together and jam privately. It was a sad state of affairs, but music surmounted it.

Ironically, music (and food) are perfect examples of the benefits and joy of the melding of cultures.

I think the way you figured it is exactly right, Petalia.

My spirit swings! Meanwhile my mind notices that particular band of many musicians is all white. That was not Benny Goodman's way. He was known to be colorblind, interested only in the music not the race of the musician. Perhaps cause this clip came from a movie from 1937 when racial separation was strong and not even Benny Goodman had enough clout...Nonetheless, they are hot, hot!
