I was taught through membership in a couple of 12 step programs to share my experience, strength and hope with others. The great part of that is I always have at least two out of three of those working in my life daily. It was there that I also heard the following prayer for the first time- (Saint Francis of Assisi was a 13th century saint who lived among the beggars at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome):
Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
This for me is a tall order and whenever I find that I get anywhere close to living this prayer my life improves tremendously and expeditiously. It is such a relief to try to live selflessly as this prayer sets forth. It, for me, is so freeing and so true in my life today. Thank You Jesus, thank You Lord for showing me the way and for your mercy and blessing in my life today. Amen
