We travel a lot. We go camping mostly and along the way we stop at a lot of Walmarts. I have often commented that even though the store layouts are so similar, it is NOT STANDARD which side the women's restroom is placed on. If I'm tired and dopey from sitting in the car too long, or if I'm in a hurry from sitting in the car too long, I have to consciously pay attention to check the signs before I march into the facilities.
Today I was in a hurry. The ladies' room at the front of the store was being remodeled so I had to hustle to the very back. So I was coming around the corner fast and expecting the women's bathroom to be on the left, so I was heading that way. Good thing I was still eight to ten feet away from the door I was originally aiming for, because the 20-ish man coming OUT of the men's room saw me approaching and held the door for me. I made a sheepish face and quickly veered to the right, scooting into the correct gender zone before we were both completely mortified.
It just intrigued me that the habit of thoughtfulness and the INSTINCT to hold the door for a not-so-young woman pre-empted the concern of an absent-minded female approaching the wrong side! I got quite a chuckle out of it in private and a fresh reminder to slow down and double-check the sign!
