Let the Games Begin

I have just realized something that I am shocked I was unaware of before that SparkPeople is actually like a game. This became apparent to me after I received my copy of The Spark. In it there is a page to log in and get 500 sparkpoints, then as you read you can get more points. I then began exploring and found out that there are lots of ways to get sparkpoints. The competitive side in me emerged and I am now determined to get as many points as possible. In turn I am finding motivation to follow the program. Not to mention I am loving The Spark I wish I would have thought to read it sooner. My biggest AH HA moment. I need to start small. So yesterday I decided to take my dog for a walk, I have been doing this sporadically but always assumed it wasn't enough. My planned 10 minute walk ended in a 20 minute walk simply because we lost track of time. Unfortunately, when I got home there was Panera waiting for me so I think my walk and dinner canceled each other out emoticon .

All this to say I think I am ready to get back in the swing of things and work on getting myself to a healthier, happier me.

A journey begins with a single dog walk :) and even if you're slow, you're still faster than everyone on the couch! Keep it up! :)

I come to Spark everyday and always enjoy spinning the wheel and trying to get enough points to spin the bonus wheel. It is kind of like a game, isn't it? Plus the weight loss aspect is full of numbers and stats to track, and that is kind of a game too.

I agree - I know that the SP points don't actually mean anything, but it still gives me a feeling of accomplishment when I move up a level.

Don't feel that your meal "cancelled out" your exercise, though. You may regret the extra calories of that meal; but every time you exercise, you get just that little bit stronger and better able to exercise again tomorrow. Be proud of what you did right, and try again on the food tomorrow. emoticon

ya! I play the game, too! I log in first to sparkcoach, then click my trackers, then my sparkpoints and work my way up the list! Its fun! Its a good day if I log 100 points. I also give myself one cent per sparkpoint at the end of each month and buy workout toys or DVDs with the money! Fun way to reward myself!

Starting small is smart! Way to go! Sometimes tackling one day instead of the whole thing keeps a light at the end of the tunnel. emoticon

And dogs are great motivators! emoticon

Well...when one trades focusing on the negative and suddenly the door opens to the panarama of the bounty that life offers....there is no need to focus on unhappy things.
You made your dogs day, you put those walking muscles to work...on the way to toning up and with tracking you will become more aware of your habits and also what satisfies you most...Happy Sparking.

Good for you. I agree it is like a game. I think trying to get the sparks point and moving up a level is a challenge and it is as exciting as stepping on the scale and seeing a pound gone. Have fun. If you keep it fun ,you want quit. Walk your dog everyday. Good easy, exercise. Have a wonderdful day.

I agree. I have never been very competitive, probably because I am not good at athletic activities. Somehow SP is motivating without being threatening and I find myself wanting to earn those points. The support from others is great too! emoticon

There are many who will say that the SP points is a shell game. NOT ME. Of course its a game, but why make our journey a continuous downer?

I go for the points every day. It is just one small element in the road to the finish line.

Good blog.

Yes, it is like a game. It is a win-win. Just logging in every day makes us aware and we get points. But who can stop at that? I want to be at the top and when I make it, I will be maintaining my goal weight and healthy lifestyle.

I'm so glad to hear that you are finding your motivation again. Just think - even if you didn't do the walk the Panera still would have been there so you are ahead of where you would have been.
