Pi Day!

Thursday, March 14, 2013

That's not a typo, it's pi day today! For those who don't recall from math, pi is the ratio of a circles circumference to its diameter and it crops up all over math, science and engineering. Like the natural log, e, and a few other significant constants. One of the decimal approximations is 3.14, (hence, Mar 14). In two years, it will be 3.14.15 or the first 5 digits in the infinite non-repeating series.

And tangentially related:

Speaking of pie though, I found some rhubarb at the store the other day and we have guests coming over for dinner on Saturday night. That means strawberry rhubarb pie with crumble topping! Yum! While that will probably send me over my calorie range, I will enjoy baking it, eating it and then running it off the next day!

I forgot all about pi day! Thanks for the reminder. I'll have to tell my two math brained sons since they both have pi memorized out to the 18th digit or something unfathomable to my non-math brain. Love the first cartoon here and I've obviously already seen the second one. ;) Happy Pi day! emoticon

Thanks for sharing this. We used to have our students bring in pie for PI day. Maybe not all that healthy, but it was memorable.

Loved the 1st cartoon. Liked the 2nd. My first response to that one was "Pac-man eating pie."

Ah, but if you round 3.14159, it comes to 3.14.16, three years from now.

What do you get when you take the moon and divide its circumference by its diameter?

Answer: Pi in the sky.
