98 Days Until Summer, Spark Streaking and the Power of Habit

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Two days ago, someone posted a blog titled 100 days until summer. That got me thinking.

I have been "Spark Streaking" with some different goals this year.

The biggest habit that I need to get firmly down is tracking and staying within my allotted nutritional ranges. I've been "practicing" since mid December with mixed results. I have been pretty good at tracking and being honest. My biggest problem is staying within the nutritional ranges allotted to me. I need to make staying in my allotted range a habit.

The next habit I want to improve is fitness minutes. I have been trying to get in some sort of extra activity in every day, even it is only walking the dog, or reaching a certain number of steps (10,000+) But I kind of suck at tracking it. I would like to be more consistent with tracking it.

The next habit is water. I need to fill up my bottle every morning, drink it by noon and then fill it up again and drink it by bedtime.

I don't want to call these "goals" because a goal implies reaching it and then it ending. I want these to be habits and for the most part they are albeit they need some tweaking.

Simple right?

Well, up until now my streaks have been busted after 3-5 days.

So yesterday I and a Spark Friend set ourselves the challenge of Spark Streaking for 99 days until summer with these habits.

I'm going to check in every day for 99 days and lay it out to myself and the universe how improving my habits for the day went and whether, for that particular day, did I reach my "habit" (not goal!)

Day 1 was yesterday.

Today it is 98 days until summer.

What habits do want firmly in place by then?

This was great. I need to sit back and give this some thought because every year I get all amped up and then come June 20 I am all disappointed.

Thank you

I think the habit I need to work on is watering my plants! My snapdragons were looking wilty this morning. This is not a good start to my gardening if I want delicious salsa by summer!

Oh Get out of my head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been "practising" the same habits and it is hard to do that trifecta daily - calorie range - fitness minutes - water... 3 simple things that are driving me crazy!!!!!!!!

But what is this???? 99 days to summer -- - holy crap! I"m with you _ it's time to get serious about this - - - Time to go hard core -- - and JUST DO IT!!!!

You have opened my eyes and help me see that it's time to stop pretending to lose weight and time to just do it- THANKS! - the days are just sliding by and it will be summer before we know it!

You can do it! I tried to form habits and with time they became easier and easier and now they would be difficult to break. Yes, you can do it. You can do it in fewer than 100 days!

Awesome blog! I agree with your thoughts about "goals." This isn't a race that we'll win or lose. This is life to live as well as we choose. Having healthy habits in place is liberating. Nutrition tracking is becoming a routine for me. I don't have to think twice about drinking my water throughout the day. I'm still recovering from the flu, but I'm getting back into fitness. By next week, I'll be back up to 2 hours per day (I was there before and I know how to make it work with my job and the rest of my life).

It's 90degrees here! It feels like summer already!

Ohhh... by then, I want the habit of walking down a sandy beach completely shame-free permanently and irrevocably cemented in my psyche.

But, I'll settle for positive self talk and making my workouts a priority!

Great habits you are forming and tracking them everyday until summer. I know when I was developing this habit I learned a great deal about the eating habits I had that would wreck and ruin an otherwise good day. I also learned meal planning for a week (which started out as a few days at a time).
Good luck with your streak of habit changers!
