Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

The news broke into a show I was watching this afternoon - white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney. A new Pope! I'm not Catholic, but he is still an important world leader. I waited and waited, putting off the pup walk. Finally harnessed them up, and off we went. I had my iPhone, listening to music. Beep! News flash from one of the local TV channels - Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio is now Pope Francis I. Let's hope he is a strong leader. I wish him the best.

Songwriters: KERN, JEROME / HARBACH, OTTO. From a 1933 musical, Roberta. Covered by The Platters in 1958

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
"Something here inside
Cannot be denied"

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
When your heart's on fire
You must realise
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed and I gaily laughed
To think they would doubt my love
Yet today, my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
"When a lovely flame dies,
Smoke gets in your eyes."
