I was attacked by a runner

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Yes, if you look at my spark teams, I belong to 2 running related groups. However, I am not a runner. I am doing the C25K training (in week 8) and I am planning on running in my first 5K in June. For me, and this is only for me, not making judgements for anyone else, I am not a runner. To me, being a runner is a mindset. It isn't simply a statement that if you run, you are a runner. Being a runner is someone who puts thoughts and plans into their training. It's spiritual. It is not that for me. I am fairly certain I will never be one of those people. For me, it's just another way to get cardio in. And people are very supportive if you say you are going to do a 5K.

Today, I got blind-sided by a co-worker who is a runner. She placed a large stack of running magazine on my already rather cluttered desk. She gave helpful advice that all started with, "You HAVE to..." That method doesn't work for me. Ever.

So tomorrow, I am seriously considering putting a sign on my cubicle wall.

Try " I have to breathe, I have to sleep. I do not HAVE TO read anything. But you do HAVE TO understand that I do not want unsolicited advice. I'm happy you found your groove. Now, Leave me alone to find mine."

I am not a runner either. I really like walking, but running... not for me!

Running for me, will definitely be a means to an end - cardio to keep/get fit so I can do things I like doing for longer than I would be able to otherwise. But it will never be my passion. And it isn't that I don't want input, feedback, etc. If that were the case, I wouldn't belong to running spark teams. There is a co-worker I've talked to a great deal about running. It was more the feeling of being lectured to that I didn't like.

Also feel I need some clarification about making fun of people who run... I also make fun of people who exercise, particularly those who work out n gyms in the wee hours of the morning (like I do), people who are addicted to reading (I'm not addicted. I could quit reading books any time - after I lost my vision and books of any sort no longer existed). It's something of a joke. My dad is fond of making similar sorts of remarks that apply to himself and then pretending to realize he's just made fun of himself by adding, "Hey, I resemble that remark".

Love the cartoon; that was priceless!! I'm still toying around with these running ideas that are dancing through my head. I think I'm going to go for it but I have to plan it out a little better. I don't want to just jump in and fail. I think I'm shooting for later spring when I can do this outside. Will keep you posted, but thanks for the laugh. I think that may turn out to be me too!! emoticon

Yeah. There's nothing like somebody telling you "HAVE" to do something. That never works for me either. Good luck with your training. emoticon
