I have spent most of my life on a variety of "diets", some gimmicky, some more mainstream. When I first stumbled onto Sparkpeople years ago, I knew this was the very best plan out there. Best parts for me? Free, always with me (I have an app on my phone) and full of great support system builders. And the food tracker was the best I've seen. Even though I lost weight on both of the first 2 times I joined, it still felt like a "diet" I was subjecting myself to. It felt temporary, and my attitude about adding the exercise to my life simply sucked. I only did it because I had to. As you can guess, I couldn't make it last.
So, in January of 2012, my friend and I decided that something had to change. We are in our 40's and we were feeling the aches and pains that this decade, especially when being overweight is added to the mix. I knew I needed to lose weight, and badly, but I just knew that the key to making it to whatever goal I set for myself, was exercise. So we started going to aquafit classes. Easy enough to incorporate into my life as the pool is 5 minutes from my home, and my youngest child was old enough to play while I did the class. Within 6 weeks, I was committed. I loved that I could get a good workout without pain in my joints and didn't feel all sweaty. I bought my family a membership for the year and worked on 3-4 classes a week. By the end of July, people were commenting on how good I looked and as I hadn't been doing any food tracking (just eating healthy) I was impressed that I had lost 20 lbs. I knew it was time to add Sparkpeople to the mix.
Since then, I've lost close to 50 more pounds. And I'm not feeling as if it's a temporary diet. It feels different because I'm excited about the changes I've made to my life and how much better I feel. I'm excited about continuing this journey and can't wait to see how I feel as I progress. My attitude has totally changed.
