A Bowl of Rocket

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

Saturday night I had an invitation with friends. I was scared as I did not know what types of food would be there so I decided we would bring , besides two white wine bottles, a bowl of salad. I ended up with rocket as it's tasty and washed it really well. It was crispy and savoury with a bit of bitter - perfect in my eyes.
I brought it in a nice glass container with a blue cap.
The supper was at a friends' house, and I gave it to her. To my surprse, she had a disgusted expression on her face as she saw the salad.
She put it on a side table and forgot about it. I was nearby, so I offered it to the guests next to me when the second coures arrived. To my horror, the hostess never thought to offer it nor put a fork so that guests could help themselves so I used a knife to put it on my plate but it was impossible for the others to help themselves...I was so humbled ..I know it's stupid but rocket was my staple food for that meal. The rocket was disgraced and neglected and I felt the same.
Someone else was at the centre of that invitation so I ended up watching TV all one as nobody paid attention to me.

I felt really bad, despite all my good intentions. It went all wrong and I'm still wondering why?????????

PS Now the hostess and friend has offered us the chance of a summer holidays to US with them.
It means I will have to do all the paperwork (passports ,air tickets )and they only expect to land beautifully on some airport in US.
This is the fun of it. The last time we planned a trip together they canceled it the very day we had to leave and Germany is still waiting for us... Their change of plan at the last minute cost me about 300 euros and I'm still wondering why should I experience it again?
So dear SP people, I need your help: Should I go on or refuse to organize such a complex trip with them?BTW they can only speak a bit of French therefore guess who would be translating the whole time????

Don't go with them, if you have to suffer through an evening being made to feel lonely in front of the telly, can you imagine what a whole holiday will be like?
Rather go see John.
Sounds like my first couple of holidays with the in laws...endless misery. (We are friends now- it took about 10 years)
If you do decide to go tell them that because you paid for the trip to Germany that they cancelled, they need to pay everything up front, like John said.

I love rocket lemon juice and olive oil...add some bread and its heaven.

I'd be cautious about planning the trip without a real commitment from your partners. That means you should require them to make a financial contribution up front so if they decide to back out you are not stuck with all the responsibility.

I'm really torn here because on the one hand I'm not sure why you would want to travel, especially such a great distance, with people who are so rude and uncaring. If it were I, then I'd think about that long and hard before I planned on spending time with them. A vacation should be fun not some terrible memory down the road.On the other hand when I read you might be coming to the USA I leapt (Yes I actually leapt) from my desk and told Joan there was a chance we might be able to meet you.

Finally I want to apologize for being so inattentive to you my friend. My family found out a few weeks ago my mother has mid-staged Alzheimer's and we are dealing with those issues. Please forgive me.

Much Love

John

I LOVE rocket!!!! It's my favorite salad, and I actually pick it out of the mix to eat first!

And your friend needs to learn how to be a gracious hostess!

It just shows that they are not your friends. Many times when I get a invitation to someones house i ask if I can bring a salad as we are trying to watch out weight. Time to speak up and ask for a fork for the salad. Life is to short to let it go by with out speaking up. emoticon

That was very rude and insensitive of your friend.
I love rocket and could eat it with every meal. She
should've at least give people a chance to have
some. emoticon

one man's beer is another man's poison!

don't know why your hostess didn't just graciously accept your salad... maybe she felt insulted?
