And I Ran...

Sunday, March 10, 2013

When I broke my collar bone, the doc told me no running. He didn't want the bone jarred. That was 6 weeks ago. He also told me there would be a 6 to 8 healing period for the bone. To me, that means 6 weeks. Friday was my 6 week check up. The bone hasn't completely healed, but the doc seems happy with how things are going. I asked about riding again. He asked, "Are you going to crash?" Funny guy. I told him I hadn't planned on it. He gave me 2 more weeks off the bike. Personally, I think he should refrain from golfing until I'm back on the bike. Mike, my bone doc is my brother in law's brother. He had just got back from a week of golfing in Florida. Then he tells me to stay off the bike. HRMPH!!! He did not say anything about running. So today, I ran. It sucked. I walked a quarter mile and then ran less than a tenth of mile. Lungs were on fire, vision dimmed, legs ached, it was wonderful. I haven't felt like that in so long. Usually, I'm like that at the end of a run. Today, I was less than a fifth of the way into it. So I walked until my breathing got back to normal and took off again. I reapeated this a few more times. Each time I finished running, I looked at my gps to see what my pace was just before I finished running. Every time it was under 10 min/mile. When I walked, it was consideribly slower. That's fine.

I got 2.52 miles in. I would've gone 3 miles, but I was crunched for time. When I got back home, I sat down in my easy chair, put up my feet, and smiled. I smiled because, finally, I ran....

Hope the 2 weeks flies by! Great job on the running! I know it had to feel awesome to get back out there and have some wind moving around you (no matter how fast or slow you went).
