Half Marathon Man

Saturday, March 09, 2013

Iíve done something really stupid.

I signed myself up to run 13.1 milesÖa half marathon. The Bupa Great Birmingham Run.

Iím doing it for charity thoughÖ does that count? An awesome charity called Acorns Childrenís Hospice.

Iím very nervous. VERY. I have never run more than 10km before. EVER! When I was at school I was a short distance runner. Very short distance. Iím talking 100m at the most. I played football (soccer for you non-UK folk) and I donít ever remember being tired while doing so so I must have been quite fit.

I started running again a couple of years ago. Iíve run a couple of 5km races and a few 10km races. I havenít run any races since September and Iíve barely run since then.

I think I should start trainingÖ..

Iíve signed up for the Great British 10K through London in July and Iíll probably do a few more races before then as well.

What have you signed up for?

I love running. I have been doing it for over 10 years now. Started with few laps around park and increasing my distance up to 10 miles now. I will be running half marathon too in a couple of weeks now. Well, one in April, second 2 weeks afterwards. And one in September - Run to the beat. Good luck with your training!

I'm the last one to comment on this blog, but I was really excited when you posted it! It just took me a while to get time to log on and comment. I've run a bunch of half marathons and led training clinics for them as well, so I'm familiar with beginner nerves and I can tell you that if you put the training time in and listen to your body, you will have nothing to worry about. It's more an exercise in dedication and consistency than in athletics. And those long runs are when your body really begins to sing! Have you got a training plan you intend to follow? Have you started building up your long runs? I'm excited to see more blog posts about your progress!

emoticon that's really amazing! Great to give you focus & for a good cause too, truly inspiring! You should be feeling very proud right now!

I'm embarrassed to say that as yet I've still not signed up to anything and know that I really should as it's a great motivator, maybe soon.

Not a stupid thing to do at all - it's a great thing to do! Actually, as it is for charity, it's downright emoticon

Congratulations on taking that awesome, crazy, scary step! There is totally enough time to train, and you will do great!

I am only 8 weeks into training for my first half marathon in May and my farthest run has been 13k so far, so I know the fear!

I hope you find a good training program and have fun following it!

I'm about 3/4 through my training plan for my first half marathon. The best thing about training is breaking/setting new records for yourself constantly. I just ran the furthest I've ever run and it feels awesome! I'm doing the Hal Higdon Novice 2 training program (you can search for it online).

It's not stupid at all!! You are going to love every second of it. The sense of self accomplishment will be so worth it for you :). I'm so excited for you - mainly also because I did the same thing and signed up for my second half marathon and told myself I would beat my previous time :S. We can do this!

Hopefully we can motivate each-other to get training! (When is your race?)

Find a half marathon plan you can stick with and you'll be fine! I'm doing a half marathon in a couple of weeks and have been skipping a lot of runs to due to heat and then rain and I'm more nervous for this one than I was my first! Enjoy your training!

I ran the DIVA half this past fall! It's great fun! And, I have another one coming up in two weeks and then again this fall. In between I have a handful of 5Ks and 10Ks and fun runs and I am going to sign up for the New York State Summer Run Series :) I usually start a program for a half 12 weeks out, but I suppose that's a personal preference. Everyone is different lol. Good luck and have fun with it!!
