10 Miler Race Report

Holy HILLS Batman!! That's the short version. Read on if you want the longer version.
Saw AURORAMILLET at the start. We just said hi real quick, but it was cool! I've never met another Sparker in person.
Not sure if I mentioned this yet, but there was a LOT of hills, about 930 feet of elevation gain. I had a wish to jog/run all the hills. I say a wish -- not a goal -- because of how unrealistic it was. It was less than a block from the start to the first hill. It's so hard to take it easy up a hill so early in a race. I tried to hold back, but still went too fast. That was a recurring theme for all the hills in the first 5 miles. There's a CRAZY climb from about mile 4.5 to 5.5. Then another about 6 to 7. I made it most the way up the first crazy climb, but then I was done with the hills! Unfortunately, they were far from done with me. The second crazy climb, I walked a few of the steeper hills, but still maintained a decent pace.
From mile 7 - 9 is pretty much all downhill, then you hit one more steep hill. It's less than a block long, but at mile 9 I was spent. I managed to shuffle up it jogging.
I usually finish really hard. There was no finish really hard in me by mile 10. I finished faster than race pace, but far below the typical sprint.
The good news is I didn't throw up at the finish. Maybe I should stop sprinting finishes at races.
Average pace was 9:28. That's awesome for me! Especially with all those @#$% hills. I ran a 10K 3 weeks ago that was the same course as the first of the 10 miler. I was sick at the 10K. Today I beat my 10K pace by 24 seconds per mile.
Next race is a Half Marathon. It's primarily gradual down hill and flats. I suspect it will be easier than today's race. Only time will tell!
