Getting Stronger but Apparently Not Thinner

Saturday, March 09, 2013

Oh man, do I have a stubborn scale! Actually I'm UP a pound since yesterday! Craziness! But I am NOT discouraged. I am doing everything right and sooner or later the scale will reflect it. I'm keeping the faith!

The SparkCoach visualization yesterday asked, "How could you measure your progress in a world where there were no scales?"

That was easy to answer. I've gotten SO much stronger. This week I did SIDE PLANKS for the first time in class. I did two boy push ups on my toes! When I first started I couldn't do a regular plank and I did wall pushups. Also, look at this Fitbit information from yesterday, after our hike. Yup, no matter what the scale tells me, I'm stronger, fitter, and in much better physical condition.

Today I'm going to go to my Women Run Arkansas training session, and will work out in the yard this afternoon. I'll plan a light day calorie-wise, and hope I at least lose the pound I gained from my hiking day! Have a wonderful Saturday, everyone!!

Getting stronger and more flexible are my next two goals as soon as I get rid of my last pound before reaching my goal and begin maintenance. You've got that down already. I think getting stronger first will pay off for you better in the long run. Hang in there!

Not to worry, you got this! You know what to do and how to get it done and it sounds like you are doing wonderful things for your body.
I say keep good health in mind....that is the most important thing you can do for yourself.
Enjoy the rest of your week end.

Ultimately, the scale has no choice! It will knuckle under! And in the meantime, as 4A-HEALTHY-BMI says, check the "volume": bet it's down!!

Thanks for your comment on my recent mammo report: I am so relieved every time!

    Burn the scale!!!!
I'm so glad that you can see your progress, I weighed in on the first and will weigh in again on the 28th. It is your actions that are most important. And you are:
living la vida sano
(living a healthy life)
and that's what you want, no?

LOL. You most likely ARE getting thinner. Have you used a measuring tape lately?

The reason I say this is that the scale cannot tell you how thin you are. It measures how heavy you are. Not your volume (size).

If you're losing fat and/or gaining muscle, your size may decrease while your weight may not reflect this.

See here for the relative size of 5 lbs of fat vs 5 lbs of muscle:

So, great job on the side plank, and ignore the scale except for matters of weight!

You just keep that focus on building health and increasing strength. BETCHA pretty soon you won't care what that silly weight number says.....you'll feel so great, you'll look so fabulous....already, right now, you KNOW you're doing terrific! ! (I just can't bring myself to type, you're doing terrifically)

Love your attitude. And your fitness numbers are great. That weight will come off...keep moving forward. Have a wonderful weekend. We all know the number on the scale does not define who we are. emoticon

The scale will catch up as your first sentence says. Hang in there.
Although muscle doesn't really weigh more than fat, it sure looks better on your body. Healthier too!

You are doing great. Stronger is key. A couple years ago I started doing two boy push-ups before bed every night, then I did three then five, some nights back down to two. I can now do two sets of ten.

Keep on doing what you are doing. What an awesome day for you yesterday! Congratulations!

Hey there. Good job. This is no big secret ,but you may be gaining muscle. The thing about muscle it weighs more than fat, therefore your weight can go up or stay the same . The wonderful thing is it will begin to drop. So don't get discouraged , building muscle is a good thing. Also you maybe losing inches. Keep going you are headed in the right direction ,it just takes time for you can see. The first thing I really noticed, wasn't weight lost, but how much better I was feeling . You are getting stronger, you are doing something right and it looks good on you. Smile and keep on going. Have a great week-end. emoticon
