Ah, an interesting quality and one in which I am lacking. Fortitude involves the courage to keep trying even when you've filleted your flat and you can't find your mojo.

And when things you can't control get in the way.

Take this week. This week I was planning to start a gym streak. The weather's warmed up a bit, spring is here in a washed out and feeble sort of way, and so far 10 people have mentioned how nice my new dress looks on me (I've put notches on my desk at work. No I haven't but for a minute you thought I had didn't you? I actually have a little tally going on a post-it note. In my head).

Getting back to what I was supposed to be talking about, I have enough stuff to feel motivated about, and then guess what happened at work yesterday morning? I started to go down with a cold.

'Oh what fresh hell is this?' I said to myself, in Dorothy Parker mode.

Felt increasingly grotty, got home, mooched around, went to bed early, slept badly, woke up at 3am with my right nostril stuck to the pillow with . . . sorry that really WOULD be too much information wouldn't it? Bleugh bleugh blah. Drifted back to sleep, woke up at 5.15am, reached for trashy novel, dozed, woke up at 6.45am, reached for Laptop, logged on to see if I've got a new popular blog award and I haven't and if you think I don't care about not getting one you're mistaken, tried reading the Guardian website
but too much like hard work switched off Laptop and mooched for 15 minutes.

And remembered that the SparkJourney thing is lifelong, it's about what you do every hour of every day, it's not about short-term goals it's about the bigger picture. So no good lying around in bed and saying 'I'm going to go down to Tesco's and buy myself a binge cos I feel lousy and I had plans for today.' There'll be plenty of other days when I don't feel very Sparkly and it's no good using a cold as an excuse to eat junk. There'll always be an excuse to eat junk if you want one and I've been doing a lot of that recently.

So I got up and made healthy low calorie porridge for breakfast and ate two-thirds of it.

Just off to scrape the other third off the inside of the microwave.

Speak soon.

I recommend drinking lots and lots of water to get rid of a cold quickly. It is something I used to see my father do and believe in. He also took medicinal hot toddy's. chin up and full steam ahead.

While I understand your self-examination of fortitude, others measure it my your frequent walk-a-abouts. So, your glass is really MORE than half full in my eyes.

P.S. I am slowly adding the King's english to my southern vocabulary. Cheers!

I'm so sorry you have a cold. They're miserable any time of year, but in the Spring (and it IS almost here) colds have a way of making us feel extra miserable. I hope yours leaves quickly.

I'm getting over bronchitis myself, and am still not quite 'there' but am now able to resume exercise. That's a big mental lift.

You have a writing gift, and we are beneficiaries of it. Thank you for posting even though you feel lousy.

If I may say, still waiting to see a pic of your new dress ON you. : )

I hope this weekend is restful and healthful for you, so that by Monday you'll be feeling much better.

I generally cover stuff in the microwave to avoid having a huge mess to clean up. Just a thought. emoticon

Does it make me a "mean girl" if I'm grinning at your blog about suffering a Spring cold? Just really grinning at you blog!

The whole point of these annoying colds, is that they force to be grateful for feeling good when they're gone!

And I find that your quota of Fortitude is really right up to the top! Your "walks", would be a death march for me!

So emoticon And get out and enjoy Spring!

The more things become habit, the less fortitude they require. It becomes just something you do.

Could I send you a Spirit Stick to cut your notches into?

I believe my body is letting me know it needs some rest when it gives in to the cold beasties. I get some warning signs from it before hand. Something like it telling me to take a nap for a couple of days, or sleeping in, or wanting to, or thinking I should have. Or missing an appointment by falling asleep in the chair sitting straight up.

If I don't give in, I get sick 2-3 days later.

Does it work? Well, I'll knock on that spirit stick first, but I haven't had a cold or flue since 2006.

A cold can make me feel ill way out of proportion to its ability to threaten my life and limb. As a result, those around me don't offer me the solicitude I feel I so richly deserve. Thus life seems highly unfair. Exploding porridge would have topped it all off for me.

Sincere sympathies from across the pond!!

I hate the mornings when you scape the porridge out of the microwave. Hot tea with honey usually helps me on those mornings too. Hope you feel better soon. I have been fortunate enough to have missed out on any colds this winter, even when my hubby has had two. I credit extra vitamin D to this good luck!. emoticon

Gracious! I've been fighting a cold all week also and I've tried something new for it. 1 tablespoon of honey and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon in 8 oz. boiling water. Stir it up and sip on it. The steam helps to open you up, and the honey and cinnamon have all sorts of wonderful qualities, I don't remember, but it's supposed to help. Oh, and it tastes GOOD. Depending on my mood, I might dribble in a bit of bourbon too, but not much :-) Feel better!
