Creative Placemats: cast your vote!

Thursday, March 07, 2013

Our family just purchased a new dining set ...seats 8. The chairs are lovely, covered in dark brown leather, very comfy. The table is SO Heavy...:::made of Himalayan rosewood, and has iron touches as well. We are excited as this is our first set after using an old mismatched table we have had for years.

My mission is to create "fun" placemats. Here are my assortment of ideas, but first I wanted YOUR vote!

Recently, I became a Pinterest member. What a neat site. It has been of value to me as it replaces my "bookmarks" that I am endlessly referring to. So, very cool! emoticon emoticon Several of my ideas came from the ideas of other on Pinterest.

The first pic of denim placemats are adorable....and perhaps are my first choice...:::so far. I can see us recycling jeans together as a family LOL!

Here are cute placemats that roll up & travel. Easily created for & by kids! There's a link below on "how to" make these.....

-directions/

Fancy-schmancy placemats that would take a great deal of time & talent.
Love the colors! However, I am NOT a quilter.

Perhaps my children would enjoy this project the most! And we have plenty of great books ...:::somewhere in the garage:::... that are falling apart. They could each chose a favorite & be creative. We have a fantastic place in town that laminates large stuff.

Lastly, here is an easy idea that uses of all things...:::burlap! I could stencil our names, or a special word or even a scripture reference....there are so many creative possibilities.

And here's an idea for the edges.

Our table runner has quilted, ruffled touches, and I just love the turquoise, brown and lime green!

Here are placemats that match. I chose these first....but that was before I thought it would be fun to let our children add thier creative touch!

So, what do YOU think? emoticon It's YOUR turn to vote!

Your table turned out beautiful. I smiled when I saw the denim placemats at the top. A great way to recycle those fat-jeans.

What fun indeed and Pinterest is fabulous. I'm making my step DD's bridal shower invites off an idea I saw there. So excited about them. I'll share once we get there. I love the jean ones as well and including the kiddos is a grand idea. I think variety is the way to go too. No 'one' fits all occasions. Thanks for sharing!

All look really interesting. Personally since I wash not given a lot of creativity genes would go with the kids one and let them get totally creative with their own placemats!

Why not let each kid choose the one they like best? Who says they even have to match in theme?

What creative ideas! I love the fancy smanchy ones and the rolled up ones -- also the ones that are hand painted (?) --I like them all! The laminated ones are easy to clean and so many different things to laminate. We had a large wild animal calendar that we used the beautiful photos from and laminated those for when we had all eight grandkids here. They loved them and would come running to the table to pick the one they wanted that meal. We have burlap ones at church that we used for a harvest dinner and I agree, they are difficult to clean. We keep throwing them away and are down to about 20 out of 200.
But they do have charm. Good luck with the project!

Your table runner is gorgeous & "dressy" so I would go with the turquoise ones that match it. But, for everyday use I love the laminated ones using your children's books!

My 2nd choice is the blue jeans & 3rd is the burlap. But, truthfully they are all adorable!!

    I LOVE Pinterest too!!

    They are all so cute!

But burlap is scratchy against your hands, and hard to clean.

My vote would be for one set of denim and one fancy.

For a rainy-day project, make collages out of several book pages together , then laminate.

You found so many appealing things!

I love Pinterest, and I love placemats and table runners! So much fun to change with the seasons or just as your mood strikes.

I used to love to laminate my children's artwork. They bring home so much of it from school - it's fun to take some of it. Another great idea is to make what I call "thankful" placemats. Have your children write a letter saying what they are thankful for and then laminate them and use them for placemats!!! It's a great way to start your day off - we are all blessed in so many ways!!

My first choice is the same as your choice--I love the denim and I think it's a neat, family friendly project.

My second choice would be the books. How cool that you have a place that laminates large stuff. I have a small laminator at home, but I don't know if it would laminate something the size of a placemat.

Of course, I love the fancy-schmancy ones, but they do look time consuming. I'm also not a quilter, but I love anything quilted.

You'll have to let us know which you choose, and post a picture of the finished products displayed on your beautiful table.

I am not going to vote because you should have them ALL! I have a sideboard FULL of placemats and napkins and I use them seasonally and for fun to celebrate and savor. You don't need a reason to use the "good stuff" I have placemats for anything/everything and even fun ones for breakfast headed out the door for just the teen (1). I often get fun ones at the thrift store. Right now I have some that were very expensive on the table in the sunroom and I got six of them for $1.99. I have a laminator and make them too. When my Daddy passed away I found a placemat that I made for him once with pictures of he and my son and he used it every day....Placemats can be memory makers for you and your kids. When I flew to spend Thanksgiving with my son last year I brought placemats and napkins for the table and he started telling stories to his girlfriend of years past and memories of tablescapes I had done....Don't choose!!!! Burlap is VERY popular right now. If you go to my pinterest page you'll find an entire board on burlap and a great site....CELEBRATE AND SAVOR!!!!!

I prefer the fancy-schmancy followed by the matching ones. Guess I've always preferred a more formal dinner setting (no kids).

Why limit yourself to one. I like the laminated book pages for informal meals. But the turquoise ones are very pretty for more formal meals. And the burlap say lunch to me. All very creative.

I grew up on a ranch in Wyoming & received cute denim placemats with bright red bandana napkins as a young bride.....which I still have!

But I like the book placemats because:
    They offer variety.
You could introduce books they haven't read yet to pique their curiosity & desire to read them.
    They're colorful! Color inspires JOY!
They would encourage discussion and sharing of thoughts & ideas during meals.

Let us know what you decide.

I vote for the laminated book pages. Very clever idea and forgiving of drips and messes. Funniest part of your selections is the burlap ones. We made those exact design in Girl Scouts oh so many years ago. Guess that means they're a classic.
