Elections should be held on April 16th-
the day after we pay our income taxes.

That is one of the few things that might discourage politicians from being big spenders. emoticon

The congress are elected by us, to bad we have left them get away with special insurances not offered to any other American; if they had to be on the terrible health insurance many of their constituants have---there would be some changes made. You know that idea of electing them after taxes are filed may be a thought, as long as a nation we stand up and start demanding changes to them to.

Yes! I've always liked Thomas Sowell's articles, they were one of the ones I read every when when I still got the paper delivered.

I agree whole heartedly! The spending is out of control!

What's interesting is that most people don't realize that their employer actually has to MATCH the employee's taxes every month. So people don't realize that part of their wages IS the other half of withholdings. Businesses have to factor that in when calculating how much to pay their employees. MORE taxes = Lower wages.

We all hate paying taxes, but it is necessary. Looking at all the services provided through taxes shows how important it is. The problem is when the rich get to avoid paying taxes through loopholes and it falls upon the shrinking middle class to support everyone. Remember: if people weren't paying taxes there'd be no social security, no medicare, no state health care, no aid for the disabled or working poor, no aid for natural disaster cleanup, food prices could be 5-10x what they are, anyone who isn't wealthy couldn't send their kids to school, and our infrastructure (roads, bridges - like 35W bridge in Minneapolis, utilities, etc) would crumble.

I've studied economics so I understand the need for taxes; I support fair taxation and dramatic changes to simplify the tax code. Take a moment and research the origins of the US tax code. It's interesting to read!

Congress should live amongst their constituents and tele-commute! Live by the same rules and health and pension plans as everybody else. Why are they so special anyway?

I so agree as well. Write a check for taxes everytime a payroll check is given. We need to authorize spending, not just elect the politicians.

I so agree with that!! Another thing that would help is instead of having payroll withholding for people to have to WRITE A CHECK for the full amount of their tax! I think a lot of people would look at it a lot differently then!! I realize that isn't a logical option as too many people would spend all their earnings and not have the cash available to pay their tax - but it would open a lot of eyes.
