I have belonged to the Y for 2+ weeks now and have been there 5 times. It is already worth the monthly dues. As I continue to explore the 3 facilities in my direct radius, I have learned a few things.
The facility closest to where I work has a great weight facility with all new equipment and an amazing hot tub with a plethora of jets for the shoulders, lower spine, and calves.
The complex in the next town up (which is furthest from my home) is brand new, has all kinds of amenities, but is crowded at all hours.
The final facility is in the next larger town south of where I live. It has walk-in pool, a great locker room with a sauna and steam room in it, and a great weight facility.
The most important thing I have learned this week is that, after working a 10 hour day with my students I do not have the energy to both swim laps and work out in the weight room. I tried to do both on Tuesday and experienced an epic fail when I sat down on the bench in the hall outside the weight room for a brief rest and woke up 20 minutes later to someone asking me if I was okay. Yes, I was embarassed, but it made me realize that I have only so much energy in a day.
My new plan is to alternate swimming and weights during the work week and do both on weekends when I am more rested. I know. It is not exactly rocket science, but it is my plan for now.
