Sleep Challenge AND Better Eating Challenge

I'm into the second week of the sleep challenge. My short term goal is to just get seven hours of sleep. Ultimately I would like to build up to at least 7.5 hours. This week I still haven't been able to achieve seven hours, but each night it has improved ever so slightly. There are a couple of things that I have done that seem to be helping. First, I dropped the temperature in the bedroom just a notch. I tend to be very cold but I kept waking up either freezing or too hot so maybe the room temperature was too high. I have two extra blankets on the bed so I think that I will go with the cooler room temperature and just cover up more if needed. I also have been playing classical music before bed and have actually fallen asleep with it on for three nights now. The last thing I have done is if I wake up with pain in my leg, I have been trying to lay flat on my back. Back when I was going to physical therapy for a pinched nerve, the therapist kept insisting that I sleep flat on my back with only one relatively flat pillow. First of all, at that time I had the most serious case of reflux that I had practically sit up to sleep (and even then I would wake up choking). She didn't believe how bad it was and insisted that elevating the head of the bed would be adequate. Well, no it wasn't but that is irrelevant now because my doctors finally convinced me to have the surgery for that and it isn't an issue anymore. But the other thing is, when I did try it, I could never get to sleep laying that way. I have always been a side sleeper, so when I gave the back sleeping a try, I pretty much laid awake for three nights in a row and got very grumpy and cranky and couldn't function at work. So I stopped doing that. So now I am going to give it a try again, but only if I wake up and my leg hurts. I have been doing that for a couple of nights and that seems to be helping too.
I am also doing the better eating challenge and that went pretty well last week. This week....I am supposed to eat five veggies a day. That is not going so well. I still have serious dietary issues after the acid reflux surgery and while I am doing better every day, I just can't seem to manage getting enough water or fruits/veggies. If I eat that many veggies, I will not have hardly any calories or protein because I eat only about half a cup at a time...so I would eat five times and it would be low cal veggies and nothing else! Then I could eat one other meal that would be protein but it would not be enough calories to make up for the calorie deficit from just eating veggies. Well, this challenge might have not been the best choice for me right now but I will say this....everything happens in small steps so that is what I am going to do. If I can't eat five servings of veggies, I will just eat two. Isn't that the way we should be doing it anyway? Small goals will get is where we need to be!
