Does everyone hate tax time as much as me?

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

So once again, Iíve been away from Spark for a few days. While I would prefer to spend all of my spare time playing, exercising outdoors, or checking out my friends activity here, there are those unpleasant things that we must occasionally make time for. So I spent my weekend off doing the one thing I hate the most - preparing my taxes.

I used to pay a CPA to do them when I was also working as a licensed massage therapist, but my carpal tunnel surgery in both hands ended my practice. Without all those other business forms to include, I couldnít justify paying the high price for tax preparation any longer. So I stopped procrastinating this weekend and went to work. I admit there were a few times when I had to stop and remind myself again why I wasnít paying Chris (my CPA) to do this for me. But in the end, I got them completed and e-filed, and I saved us a bunch of money. Yay!!! emoticon

I then spent the last two days, when not at work, searching for a new mattress set - something Tommy and I really need. Is it me, or are the big name brands making their mattresses cheaper? We bought a Simmons Beauty Rest mattress years ago and it has been wonderful, but even the best wear out. When I checked out the new ones I was really disappointed because they didnít seem as well made. Anyway, I ended up finding what I hope will be a great mattress set that came highly recommended by my sonís friend and it will be delivered next week. Hopefully our quality of sleep will improve. emoticon

Now back to the important things like spending time with family and friends and hiking, biking and kayaking (if the weather will hurry and warm up). Hope you are all having a great week!

I am right there with you on dread and disdain for doing the taxes!! I used to procrastinate until the last possible minute... but now I try to get them done sometime in March. (hopefully soon).

I don't think I would do them without a program like TurboTax that has all the prompts and does all the calculations with the data you input. My husband's work (free lance / self employed) makes it complicated... but I have been able to do them so far.

I think buying a mattress is one of the hardest purchases to make because it is so important to make a good choice, and it is a large purchase. I hope you got a great set that gives you peaceful, comfortable sleep!

The weather is finally starting to warm up ~ I am SO excited!! emoticon

I admire you for doing this arduous task yourself. I'm lazy, and I guess I value my time (and sanity!) more than my money, but I just can't force myself to do it. Good for you!!!!
Agree with you about the quality of merchandise. I think most items are made off-shore with little quality control. I hope your new set brings on the z-z-z-z-z's. emoticon
Have a great weekend. Hope you can get outdoors!

It seems such a waste of time b/cuz we know our friends in Washington are just gonna waste anything we send them. Never liked tax time, never will! Hope everything else is going good for you, Tommy and Thor!

    Tax time is taxing......... emoticon

I used to pay my CPA a hefty fee for the prep and filing. Then one year he made a blooper----a big one that would have cost me big time. By the time I realized what he'd done, he'd already filed electronically. When I kept insisting he made a mistake.....he just got nasty (after a 10 year friendly relationship!!!) I was really stressed..... I owed thousands! It was just not possible, and he refused to review the forms.

It was less than a week before April 15.... and I was passing an H&R Block office in my neighborhood ---- advertising a free "second look" at your tax forms. With nothing to lose, I got the manager to look, and she found the error!! She filed an amended form......and the IRS mailed a letter absolving me of the exact amt. of the 'mistake'. While the 'second look' at Block was free -- I had to pay a fee for filing the amendment.....small price to pay for saving 5K~!!!

I've been using her ever since!! Who'd a thunk???

I'm so glad you got it behind you --- when will they EVER simplify the tax codes??
Could be worse, I guess - we could have to file 2x a year!!!!

Take care, Cindy - Hi to Tommy & a scratch behind the ears for Thor!

Taxes are a pain and that is why I let our tax lady do them! I don't like that job at all. I used to do them, but not anymore.

Sorry to hear the Carpel Tunnel made you quit your job as a massage therapist. I heard that can be really painful.
