Effects of MSG

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

Last evening, I had a run in with a food loaded with MSG, in all forms. In a cup of soup, you know the prepackaged type. Anyway sometimes I have to get a cheaper food to make it through paydays. Needless to say, I experienced a reaction from that cup of soup, that scared me to death. I started with heart palpitations, and my heart beating fast, a slight headache in my temples. I didn't realize what was going on and was almost on my way to a an ER, when I finally got it under control with a cup of chamomile tea, and trying to relax and stay calm. It scared me so bad, I was looking up all names of MSG that are in the ingredients on labels, holy cow, it was everywhere. In this particular soup, it had so many forms as well as it's original name it should have been called Cup of MSG! Any one else had this problem to the reaction from it? Back to eating clean as much as I can, but no more of these possibly deadly soups! emoticon

MSG is some nasty stuff. Gives me headaches too. They hid it really well in other forms (nutritional yeast, yeast, soy sauce). Best to avoid.

So glad your feeling better. That sounded like a scary experience.

I have a friend who told me a hair raising account of MSG toxicity at a Chinese restaurant.... Her face hurt along with a number of peculiar effects, and she couldn't even drive home. It was wild.

I have friends who have that kind of reaction to MSG. I have learned to stay away from it as a general rule. As a rule I have to be reminded to use salt in my cooking. But I am big on herbs and garlic.

Hope you are ok now.

Glad you figured out what the problem was BEFORE you incurred the hefty expenses at the ER!

I learned to steer clear of MSG from a similar experience. It's really everywhere in processed food land. My kids and husband love johnny's seasoning salt, and I am trying to whine them away.

I have been lucky not to have that reaction before, but I would be concerned too. I am glad that you used this experience to learn more about ingredients and MSG and that you shared it with us. Thanks!
