How to get enough protein?

Tell me what do you do?
I NEVER SEEM to be able to get enough protein it seems elusive to me.

What are YOUR protein secrets???

    I have my own chickens so I eat a lot of eggs. I eat the whole egg, and occasionally some yolks alone, but never just whites alone. Unlike what the food industry says, egg whites are filler. They are there to keep the developing chick hydrated and cushioned. They actually contain antinutrients, chemicals that are difficult to digest because those chemicals serve to keeping the yolk from dehydrating.

    I buy some steaks and roasts from the grocery store for convenience when I run out, but never hamburger. I buy as much meat as possible from the local butcher, who processes one animal at a time from a local grass farm. When I can, I pick out the animal, myself. I used to raise my own and hope to again. You can probably find someone who will split a grassfed cow, goat or pig with you.

    I take a lot of natural peanut and almond butter sandwiches with me to school. I don't use jam. I do sometimes slice up a banana to put inside. I also sometimes sprinkle nuts and olives on my salads.

    I make hummus often and eat it with carrot and celery sticks or glopped on a salad. It can be flavored a lot of different ways with wine, spices, oils and beans.

    I HATE tofu unless it is grilled, which is just as well, because it is, as Brer said, not as healthy as the food processing industry would have you believe. I do eat miso soup, which I make myself with Shiro miso and dehydrated mushrooms, konbu and bonito. Sometimes I cube tofu into that.

    No immitation meat, no favored, mashed up, dye-added anything. Like Brer, I also avoid farmed and canned fish. I'm sorry, I'm going to sound like a snob. A lot of protein marketed to dieting women is very poor quality. The ingredient lists on many veggie burgers are very long and full of chemicals.

    When the kids and I were very poor sometimes I made veggie burgers of brown rice cooked in chicken broth, a few red lentils, a few white and red beans, eggs, onions and spices. They were a low tech, nonvegan version of Morningstar's, I guess. I smooshed them flat, put a little oil in the bottom of the pan so one side would get that fried texture, and baked them. At the last minute, I turned the broiler on so the top would brown and crisp a little. I didn't try to flip them until they were cool because sometimes they'd break. I don't remember the recipe because I never had one... anyway, the kids are in their 20s now... that was years ago, when they took them to school in their lunch bags.

    I can't even imagine not getting enough protein. I'm often over what the "recommended" amount is because I lean towards Paleo by inclination and only eat starches because they are convenient for traveling.

    What do you like to eat? Are you a bread person? If so, there are breads that incorporate nuts and eggs.

    Are you on a high protein, low carb diet? If not, you probably get plenty of protein for a balanced diet.

    I'm ovo-lacto vegetarian. Dairy and egg are still in my diet --- plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, mozzarella, ricotta, and other cheeses. Beans: red beans, black beans, lentils, chick peas. Barilla Plus pasta. My family enjoys faux meat from Morningstar Farms and Field Roast sausage. I like tofu and seitan. And I use whey protein powder in my smoothies.

    Protein staples in our kitchen are:

    Greek yogurt. We buy the big plain tub and stir in preserves or fruit instead of buying flavored. Occasionally we'll also mix in a Tablespoon of nut butter such as Almond or Sunflower Seed.

    Nuts, Seeds, Butters - Almond, Sunflower Seed, Peanut Butter (we buy natural style, no salt). Nuts - Plain and unsalted almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans, sunflower seeds.

    Quinoa - We stir in herbs and spices - also sauté peppers, onions, etc. and add in.

    Beans and Lentils (Aside from kidney and soy which we do not eat).

    Poultry - We eat some chicken and turkey.

    :) Just another opinion: I avoid soybeans in any form; they are almost universally gmo's and estrogen loaded. I avoid tuna, and other large fish due to heavy metals. I don't eat farmed fish because of the antibiotics. I'd rather die than eat a protein powder; God knows what's in it!

    I keep hard-boiled eggs nearby, and eat omelets/latke/egg-flower soup, etc. I always eat the yolk because egg whites alone are NOT a balanced protein!) Too many eggs: NOT good!

    Grass-fed organic beef, cottage cheese and yogurt are sources. I try never to eat unfermented dairy, and not much of any dairy.

    Legumes are a source of protein, but contain poisonous lectins. Nuts and seeds are too, but are actually fat foods and contain lectins.

    I take any protein in moderation, just a little with each meal and, if possible, always organic. Almost all (if not all) whole foods contain a little protein, I try to eat a great variety of foods. Again, just one of seven billion opinions.

    My go to protein sources are greek yogurt either with fruit or make a veggie dip out of it, chicken breast and tuna.

    I'm not a big fan of meat so I have this problem, too. I finally broke down and bought some protein powder and having been making smoothies with it. It's helped a lot. I doubt it's the best way to get protein, but it's working for now. Good luck!
