I am a pretty avid watcher of Dr. Oz, and I often research whether products he recommends would be appropriate for me. Cause even though a product is touted to help you, the fact is that anything that has the power to help has the power to hurt, if only by allergic reaction even.
I have bought and tried a few of his recommendations. Some I have been pleased with, some not so happy with.
Right now I am experimenting with several things I learned of on his program.
~~ The St. John’s Wort that I have now been taking since Febuary 25. The first day I didn’t do so well on it, but since then it has been mostly a God-send. It does cause me to have a bit less ‘drive’, but I have been so much calmer and happier, and geez, even able to deal with cr@p from people without getting overly shook up. Actually, I’m really proud of how I’ve handled myself lately. Even though the St. John’s Wort ‘took the edge off’ I am the one who had to deal with it. Cause even 900 mg of St. John’s Wort is only equivalent to less than the minimum dose of Prozac. And I’m only taking 300 mg a day, so that’s less than 1/6 the minimum dose of Prozac. Like I said “just enough to take the edge off’. I still have to do the work. Just saying though, “that I’m very pleased with the stuff”.
Another product I recently started using is extra strength Neem face soap. It dries up pimples like crazy, while all the oils in it give my skin a wonderful smooth feel. Without all those oils in it, it would be excessively drying. Maybe once I get off junk foods I will go to the regular strength Neem soap though so I don’t dry up like an old prune.
Especially when I lose weight my face will turn into a prune because with old age I’ve lost all that nice padding under the skin… But the family trait is to still have pimples into the 70's. Pimples and wrinkles; what a combo!
And, the last product I started on is called DIM Diindolylmethane. Here is what I learned about DIM in my research. I started on this product on March 1st.
~~ Taking DIM results in more of the "good" estrogen metabolites and less of the "bad" estrogen metabolites. While DIM doesn't increase or decrease estrogen levels - it directs how it is metabolized. Even a small increase in the concentration of ‘good’ estrogen metabolites results in higher levels of free testosterone. Even tiny increases in amounts of free testosterone are capable of influencing mood and behavior since the brain is home to a multitude of hormone receptors that can be influenced by testosterone.”
~~ Other articles stated: DIM reduces the levels of estradiol, or active estrogen, by promoting its conversion into ‘good’ estrogen metabolites. These ‘good’ estrogen metabolites are fat burners. When Diindolylmethane DIM is used, a second important fat-burning shift in metabolism also occurs—an increase in free testosterone and, consequently, an increase in the testosterone-to-estrogen ratio. By the changes it makes in the hormone pathway it puts hormones in a healthier balance and decreases estrogen dominance.
~~ Note: On reviews of DIM most people raved about it, but a bare few complained that the increased free testosterone gave acne flair-ups. That’s why it’s more highly recommended in women that are pre-menopausal, or to women who are on HRT after menopause - women who have more estrogen and aren’t already ‘testosterone dominant’.
~~ Researchers were able to increase the conversion of estradiol to estriol by 50%. Remember estradiol is the stronger cancer producer of the estrogens, while estriol is often thought to be protective against cancer. Estriol is stronger in women who are pregnant or breast feeding, and studies show that in women who have pregnancies younger, have multiple pregnancies, as well as breast feeding, have a lower incidence of breast cancer.
~~ As spoken of above; DIM actually inhibits growth of cancer cells. DIM may help decrease risk of estrogen-related breast cancer and other estrogen related disorders. When DIM (diindolylmethane) changes "strong" estrogen to "weak" estrogen, it stops human cancer cells from growing and provokes the cells to self-destruct (apoptosis).
~~ During my research I was surprised to learn that if women have too much progesterone, including additional progesterone from skin cream, it can be metabolized to estrogen. The result is even greater hormonal imbalance and continued estrogen dominance.
~~ In men DIM helps to eliminate active estrogen from the male body by promoting its conversion into the ‘good’ estrogen metabolites. These metabolites then free up testosterone by bumping it off the testosterone-binding proteins.
~~ Some female weight lifters reduce or lower body fat significantly by taking DIM. When supplemental DIM is taken along with a program of regular exercise, it can help estrogen and testosterone contribute to good physical conditioning.
~~ DIM will increase the release of stored fatty acids and speed up your fat loss. The goal of fat loss with DIM is to preserve muscle mass while reducing body fat with a healthy but carbohydrate-restricted diet.
~~ DIM can improve mood, fight depression, and support memory. (I can live with that!)
~~ Since DIM is made from cruciferous vegetables, if a person is hypothyroid on meds, there is a possibility that DIM can interfere with the absorption of thyroid medication, just as taking calcium at or near the time of taking thyroid meds interferes with absorption.
Since I take my thyroid meds in the morning and afternoon, I am taking the DIM in the later evening. I make sure I take it with a meal that contains fats as absorption of this supplement is difficult under even the best circumstances. Aging and the decrease in hydrochloric acids also lessen the absorbability. Since I have early gastroparesis I make sure to take enzymes as well as HCI. Hopefully I then absorb it. I (do) have a very difficult time absorbing nutrients due to the gastroparesis.
By carefully researching and taking specific supplements I have been aided in staying alive 13 years still past being given a short time to live with heart failure and pulmonary hypertension.
I will be continuing to watch Dr. Oz and make informed choices on various products and foods. One of my favorite is ‘Just Black Cherry Juice’. Great stuff!
