Spark recommending DAILY alcohol? Shame on you!

Monday, March 04, 2013

A daily glass of wine would put even men over their units for a week, let alone a woman.

Daily alcohol is a bad habit, bad for your health, weight and mental health.

I'm shocked this is being advocated on a website meant to promote healthy living.

Occasional alcohol is fine, beneficial even, but daily is a huge no-no.
We have current campaigns in the UK about giving your body "days off" from alcohol as your heart, liver, kidneys NEED a break.

Shame on you Sparkpeople. emoticon emoticon

Good for you for being vigilant! I totally agree --- daily alcohol is not a good thing!! I read a lot about the latest research etc, and the upper limit of "healthy" drinking is 3 drinks a WEEK for a woman.
And definitely not all on the same night! :-) Anything more becomes a breast cancer risk! I just got excellent mammogram results today, and am glad I trimmed my nightly glass (or two) of wine to an occasional treat!

No, this is not a good idea to get into the habit of drinking alcohol every day. You might help one problem but you can create a host of others. I am surprised too that Spark would bring this up. I remember when I was 27 years old and working at a rehab, now we are talking 40 years ago and a doctor ordered a patient to have wine every evening for heart purposes but it was limited to not even a third of a cup and it probably acted as a blood thinner to a certain extent and it was a very small amount. As I said though this was under a doctor's order. This surely is not a habit we should develop on our own. Good for you Pookie, I missed this. emoticon emoticon

Yeah, that's no good. Daily alcohol is empty calories and slows the metabolism.

Like any other so-called 'diet' it will not benefit everyone, and if you are like me, you will pick through and choose the aspects that will work for you, and discard the rest. As for the glass of wine daily, it needs to specify the measure because, believe me, I have seen glasses you could fit more than half a bottle of wine into! LOL
Moderation is the key here, I think.

Well Done POOKIE, they missed the last part.

Maybe now we will have wine ads on our Spark pages. emoticon emoticon

To be fair, wine with dinner IS part of the typical Mediterranean diet, and a single daily serving of alcohol actually does improve peoples' insulin resistance. However, anything OVER that amount eliminates any benefit and becomes detrimental.

However, I've seen this same information in many other places and in EVERY CASE it was clearly stated that you should not BEGIN drinking to gain the benefit. SP dropped the ball on this one.
