Sunshine in Wisconsin and A Wheat Revelation

My temperature guage says 27 degrees, but the sun is shining. What does a Wisconsin girl do? Put on the coat, hat, gloves, and walking shoes, of course! Oh, and sunglasses, too, for the glare off the six inches of snow on the ground.

What a gorgeous day! My hubby took the kids sledding on a nearby hill, and I walked the mile over to the hill to check out the fun and listen to their shrieks echo over the icy air. Without a pause, I stomped on the storm drain that my DH and I measured out as the one-mile marker, turned around, and headed home. Benefits: fresh air, Vitamin D from the sunshine, and a butt that forgot what hills were and may consider lifting itself up a bit.

Now onto Part II: The Wheat Revelation

I've given up wheat for Lent, and so far it's been very interesting and worthwhile. I can honestly say that I've only had wheat in my meals four times since Ash Wednesday. Not bad! However, last night, we made lasagna and garlic bread for some new friends of ours. Also...there was a birthday cake since my old Malamute is now eleven. Did I partake of these goodies? Oh, heck yeah! And it was worth it.

After the friends left at 8:30, we put our kiddos to bed and went downstairs to watch TV...where I proceeded to have just one more slice of cake...and the rest of the potato chips...and some pretzels, because hey, the potato chips were almost all gone as it was. You got it: my first binge in a few weeks. And what was the only thing different? I ate wheat flour products with my dinner.

Wheat = Binge? Quite possibly.

Back to wheat-free. (I did have leftover lasagna today because I loathe wasting food -- especially tasty food -- but that means I'll have to be extra diligent at dinner time and afterward.)

I especially want to get back to my good habits because -- wait for it -- my weigh-in put me at 144.6! Let's keep THAT up!

    Some say that foods that raise blood sugar quickly stimulate insulin release which, itself, stimulates appetite. Refined starches, including white flour, may stimulate appetite with this mechanism. So you might want to explore whether wheat is an important factor in encouraging hunger, by seeing if whole wheat has the same effect. If whole wheat products are digested more slowly, they might be less apt to stimulate appetite.

    Great job on the weigh in! I'm down to 153.7 today! Was lower on Friday, but then we went to Hawthorne for Dr. Seuss night and I had two pieces of pizza. Was up 1.6 pounds the next day and only lost 0.1 by this morning. So annoying! Anyway, I'm still down 4 pounds on my experiment and really have been watching my wheat intake, too. And gave up sweets! The first two days were really hard and now I don't even want them.

    Yeah, you cracked the code! Wheat (carbs in general for me) elicit cravings for more and more. One of the biggest benefits I have found from limiting my carbs has been appetite control.....I stop eating when I'm hungry and don't feel compelled to eat and eat.

    over XMAS, SWMBO and I indulged in cakes & was maddening....I couldn't eat enough of them....pure madness.

    Try reading "Wheat Belly" and/or "Why we get fat"....I found them very enlightening!

    Wheat would be very hard for me to give up. Good luck on that goal!
    I am also impressed that you found a spot that marks the one mile mark! (Storm drain). Shows you intend to walk there often!
