I've been dieting for what seems like my whole life.
After I turned 35 it seemed like nothing I tried in the past was working.
In 2011, just months before my wedding day, I came across Sparkpeople and decided to give it a try. Did I try? Not really, not as much as I know I could have. I needed to lose a lot of weight to be the bride that I had in my head - but I didn't give it a 100% and only lost 4 pounds in a couple months.
Fast forward to spring 2012 when I was playing with my son outside and had my "AHA" moment. My son wanted me to play swords with him and I needed to sit down to play.
What was I doing? How was I benefiting myself or my family by carrying all the weight that had haunted me for years.
On May 28th, 2012 I went back to Sparkpeople with the determination of finally doing something for myself (and my family).
Weighing in at 220 pounds, I jumped in with both feet and took Sparkpeople to heart.
Today is March 3, 2013 and I have officially lost the weight to get to my original goal - I have lost 50 pounds!!
I say original goal, because I now see, that with the help of Sparkpeople, I can do more and I will try to lose enough weight to get me where I feel I really need to stop.
I think that without Sparkpeople I never would have been able to do what I've done.
I'm sure we've all made the same dieting mistakes in the past... skipping meals, eating non-nutrious meals, just to avoid the calories and try to get the weight off.
Sparkpeople is not a "diet" in my mind, it's a way of life. It has taught me so much on my journey, something that I will always carry with me going forward.
That's not to say I won't have those moments when I slip a little and "cheat", but I now know what it takes to stay healthy and put the right things into my body.
What are the things I love the most about Sparkpeople? There are so many things; the support from my Community and Sparkpeople friends, the tracking, as I'm a visual person and I think this tool was the most important one for me, and the fact that I didn't have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars to join a club that required me to purchase their food and take their supplements. All I have to do is make smart choices and still be able to have the odd indulgence when I want to.
Now 8 months may seem like a long time to lose 50 pounds, but the most important thing to me is that I didn't give up and the result came eventually.
I will spread the spark to whomever will listen, as I am a true believer and forever grateful.
