My update for the last couple days

Sunday, March 03, 2013

So if you've been reading these, you know I'm now dealing with gestational diabetes. I'm 33 weeks, and 3 days, so I don't have a lot of time to get this under control. The diet hasn't been too bad, I have been making better choices, watching the carbs (which has been another eye opening lesson! Lots more has carbs than I expected!) and evening them out across the day.

Soda is the only thing on my no-no list, as it causes too big of sugar spikes. So I've taken some of your (and the dietician's advice) and started drinking sparkling water flavored with frozen fruit. Or, as of right now, the sparkling water with a splash of orange juice. Not too bad, and lots healthier.

My biggest problem right now is the testing machines. The first one broke right away. So they swapped it for a new one. Got a few readings in, now it won't work again. It keeps saying "add blood to strip" even after I have. So I'm not sure what's going on. I see the doc again on Monday evening, so if I haven't gotten it to work by then I'll talk to them again.

I have been feeling much better, however. My energy has evened out a bit, so I've been doing better on the fitness end. emoticon Like today, hubby and I went out to eat for supper, and we take the bus back home. Well, we had about 15 minutes till the next bus came, so instead of sitting and waiting, we kept walking. The bus stops are about a block and a half apart in the city, so we got through 3 stops. We probably could've managed one or 2 more, but I was running out of steam. I was happy though! I managed a good pace, and it helped some of the gas bubbles - baby makes me gassy when I eat green veggies - especially broccoli! Makes me a bit sad; I miss my broccoli! LOL I never thought I'd say that! emoticon

I also noticed the first day when I did see the dietitian, I then had a very carby meal (McD's) and I felt awful - sluggish, crabby, and generally icky. When I did the math I saw that I'd had twice the carbs she wanted me to have in 1 meal. I've been sticking to that level pretty well since, and I've felt SO much better!

Oh, ultrasound update - baby is 6lb 6 oz; and unfortunately, he was hiding his face so I got no new pictures this time :( sadly. Oh well. Cause of the diabetes I'll be getting an ultrasound once a week now to watch his growth, so better luck on Friday I hope!

I'm sure that by dealing with the Gestational Diabetes right now you will continue using the healthy eating habits that you'll learn and adjust them to your diet after baby. Look at it as an experience to learn from and best wishes to you. Hope you have an uneventful pregnancy after this point.

Very exciting for you. Won't be much longer, then your diabetes will, hopefully, be under control. My daughter-in-law had the same problem.
You will be well underway to teach your new little one healthy habits. emoticon emoticon
