Habits blog 2 - Sunday

Saturday, March 02, 2013

Reading other members' blogs on this topic has been really useful as they have brought to mind some ideas for refurbishing my own habits.
One blogger wrote about her existing good habits, which made me examine my own. As she pointed out, you really have to think about them, because as all good habits should, they have become second nature and are done without consious effort. My main habit in this area is my food shopping. We have a huge new supermarket nearby which is where I go. But I realise that I haven't set foot in some of the aisles and departments. I have been no-where near the meat, soft drinks, alcohol, confectionary, ice-cream and biscuit sections. I now beat a familiar path through the fruit and vegetables where the trolley acquires most of its weight, veer right to get soy milk and nuts and seeds , pass several aisles to reach frozen fruits and vegetables, gathering up toilet rolls, pet food etc, on the way, and make straight for the check-out.
My other main healthy, unthought about habit is getting incidental exercise. This is particularly useful if we have visitors or something unexpected prevents the daily walk. I hang the washing on the clothesline at the end of the garden rather than in the drier, I do calf raises in front of the microwave, I tandem walk down the hallway, I deliberately avoid carrying everything at once when unloading the car so that I have to make several trips between garage and house. I take stairs in buildings rather than lifts and walk short distances in preference to driving the car. While my husband is not allowed to drive I've become the main driver and have noticed how this has affected my daily kilometers for the worse! We hope he will be given permission to drive this coming Friday. emoticon

Do you have existing healthy habits that you can write about?

emoticon blog, I also miss several aisles at the supermarket now. Its amazing when you add it up just how many minutes of different exercises we do in a day without thinking about them.

Great blog! I was challenged by someone who wrote awhile ago about one minute fitness. The trick is remembering to do it and to ask yourself what can I do right now? The minutes add up.

I love how you work more exercise into your day. All of that adds up and makes such a difference - thanks for reminding us of that!

    So practical!
I realized I do shopping in a similar way you do - veggies-fruis-dairy-meet and that's it, no touring in soft drinks and such. :-)

So funny that driving more means walking less, duh! Good for you for doing what you can whenever you can. Those little things add up!
My healthiest new habit is not drinking. Not sure if that counts cuz it's NOT doing something, but hey, it's hard, so I'm counting it.

I really like your idea of focusing on new healthy habits that you've developed. When I think of where I am and where I was I tend to only think of it in terms of weight or fitness. I've been adding more movement into my day and drinking mostly just water and tea (unsweetened).

Once again, you have put it in the black! Many of those habits were ones I thought of when struggling to come up with a new one to work on...I haven't been in an elevator but a few times in months, never park close in at the office or at stores anymore...walk to the market if I only need a few items, etc. Isn't it wonderful how we don't even think about them?

Now on to the ones that are not so automatic...or that we assume are ok, but may not be.....

Another great job putting down something that now seems obvious. When I was thinking about my habits blogs, I realized that I feel so off if I don't drink my water-- It's unconscious now.

I also do the perimeter of the food shops, very rarely do I venture down any of the aisles.

I am so used to my healthy habits now that they are second nature. One thing I love doing is sparking while on my Swiss ball and moving so I work my core! It's paid dividends in my posture!

I never notice the habits anymore till I realize, hey, I don't do XYZ anymore! What a change! :) Like when I either split dinner with hubby when eating out, or take half home. Before I would wolf the whole thing. I also am more willing to let the food sit if I didn't like it - I'll either take it home for someone who WILL like it, or I'll let it get tossed.

well done! - unfortunately I still carefully select a lindt dark chocolate bar for the week at the supermarket and a bottle of white wine. But I do do an hour of yoga at least twice a week now and can just touch my head on my knees in a forward bend which is easier because my tummy no longer gets in the way.. And being forced to contemplate the rolls in a shoulder stand is the best motivation ever to eat healthily!

GREAT BLOG!!! This does make one stop and think of all the good habits we have developed.
I let my produce drawers run low this past week and when the produce man came to our resort I bought $30.00 worth of produce and I will buy celery, more bananas and romaine when I get to town.
Thanks for reminding us of our good habits!
