Reading other members' blogs on this topic has been really useful as they have brought to mind some ideas for refurbishing my own habits.
One blogger wrote about her existing good habits, which made me examine my own. As she pointed out, you really have to think about them, because as all good habits should, they have become second nature and are done without consious effort. My main habit in this area is my food shopping. We have a huge new supermarket nearby which is where I go. But I realise that I haven't set foot in some of the aisles and departments. I have been no-where near the meat, soft drinks, alcohol, confectionary, ice-cream and biscuit sections. I now beat a familiar path through the fruit and vegetables where the trolley acquires most of its weight, veer right to get soy milk and nuts and seeds , pass several aisles to reach frozen fruits and vegetables, gathering up toilet rolls, pet food etc, on the way, and make straight for the check-out.
My other main healthy, unthought about habit is getting incidental exercise. This is particularly useful if we have visitors or something unexpected prevents the daily walk. I hang the washing on the clothesline at the end of the garden rather than in the drier, I do calf raises in front of the microwave, I tandem walk down the hallway, I deliberately avoid carrying everything at once when unloading the car so that I have to make several trips between garage and house. I take stairs in buildings rather than lifts and walk short distances in preference to driving the car. While my husband is not allowed to drive I've become the main driver and have noticed how this has affected my daily kilometers for the worse! We hope he will be given permission to drive this coming Friday.
Do you have existing healthy habits that you can write about?
