Back to gardening

Today I found the first frog spawn of the year on the top pond.
Oh Dear! I was getting ready to clear out some of the native yellow Iris that are taking over the whole pond with just a small patch of water . That is where the spawn is. LOL!

I had no wellies that I can get in the water with and my garden shoes that I use for heavy digging are so worn that they have no protection when I dig. I was getting lots of pain in my foot underneath. So today I searched for 2 hours on the computer to find some wellies suitable for digging. It was hopeless, kept coming up with ladies fashion boots which are no good at all. Then I searched farming and found Muckies which looked great, but too expensive. At last I found Dunlop Adamastor which were the ones my son and DH have had for about 20 years, but it was an American site and the post made them expensive and I also did not want to wait that long. I need them tomorrow, Sunday. I really wanted to try them on because of my high instep and foot problems. I often cannot get my foot into wellies and shoes.! I end up getting men's size 6.
I suddenly remembered a shop which my Uncle got his from so we went off on a sentimental journey to the village where I went in my childhood..
A lot of the shops I remember were gone and the shop I was thinking of had been turned into a walk with little boutiques. Very nice jewellery and herbs and spices, but not what I needed.
We walked to the other place where we used to take Uncle and it was still there, but changed its name or maybe ownership. We went in and they had loads of boots for hunting, riding and farming and .... Dunlop Safety wellies. I tried them on size 6 and they were huge. No trouble getting my foot in. Then DH found a pair size 5. I tried them on and they were perfect!

I felt as if I had been guided to that place. Amazing! After that we walked all around the village reminiscing. It brought back so many memories, but, emoticon I did not take my camera! So could not photograph the church or churchyard where my Grandma and Aunt were buried such a long time ago. Its such a beautiful old church. So we will go back there another day and take photos, when the weather is brighter.

The river was running fast, but the floods have subsided. Sand bags were evident in neat piles.

i came home and went in the garden after lunch. The birds were singing and chattering in the trees. The sun had come out and it was a really nice spring afternoon. Tomorrow I will attend to the pond even if it rains. LOL!

Hugs Ellen

Aaahh, the sentimental journey. I'm glad yours was fruitful and enjoyable as well. Last time I did one of those back to the place I was born, everything I'd remembered was in ruin. Sad.

How enjoyable it must be to be able to potter around one or any of your quaint little villages. Gosh and here's me thinking you take your camera everywhere ... that's a real shame as some pics would be great ... pics are always great!

This is probably the best time of year for both of us as me starting Autumn and you starting Spring. emoticon

Yes, attend to the pond!

Your blogs are always so detailed and interesting, Ellen. I'd love to see all those lovely yellow irises in bloom, but yes, they are thugs. I'm going to see if I can find those Dunlop Adamastor wellies here, as we both need some for our Springtime gardening. emoticon emoticon

I'm glad you were able to find the boots you needed. Gardening can be very therapeutic. Your description of a nice spring day sounds like just what I need. Spring is not to far away for me. The daffodils around where I stay are out and I've noticed some of the trees starting to bud a little. I'm ready for spring(not the pollen though).
I'm glad you enjoyed your walk down memory lane. Happy gardening.

I am with KNAUGHT we are up here in Maine and we too have lots of snow. I had to take care of snow removal all this year so I get tired especially my arms. Today the drive had 3 to 4 inches of heavy slush. The snow blower could not handle and I had to scoop the slush to the sides.
I got it cleared it is a big area, I blogged that a couple of days ago with pictures.

I am hoping to be able to drive the RV and we will be going to the Coastal Maine Botanical gardens. It is a fabulous place and they asked me to volunteer there. It is a long ride. I am flattered they want me to a docent. I decided i want to get an aching back for my own yard so I declined the invitation.     I'm living and enjoying springtime through your words today Ellen! Because we are still under at least a foot of snow! Growing things and gardening seems like forever away, but in truth it can't be that far away now that it's March! I'm so glad you found your boots, what a lucky find! Take good care of yourself and don't work too hard in the garden --
