2012.03.02: Suddenly Saturday!

Friday redux, Saturday as it happens, and Sunday plans.


Post-shopping we had the joy of our usual rotation, an episode each of 'X-Files' and 'Millennium'.

The latter, which was actually the first watched, was a bit weird and off-format. A dog leads us to a medical clinic, and we watch as we are led to a door from which screams come, from which a nurse escapes ... and against whose glass window we find Frank black pounding and pounding.

Cut to credits.

It's a very 90s episode in some regard, as it sinks its claws into our late-90s concerns about being over-medicated. The fictional antidepressant offered is "Proloft", which will remind one of both Prozac and Zoloft; we also have left-right chemical isomeres with nearly opposing effects. As a character piece it's sort of intriguing, and the only 'problem' might be that while the episode engages in the issue -- as 'Millennium' often does -- of the "villain's" motives and psychology, we actually get very little of said villain. The episode's focus is too soft; it plays too much like a draft in need to edits. Some episodes of 'Millennium' feel as if while they were written and produced before 2000 and especially before 9/11, they better predicted a post-9/11 world; this, however, like some of the other domestic, middle-class/America plots, is much more centered in the 90s.

In 'X-Files' we had "Tempus Fugit", the first of a two-parter involving our old friend Max, aliens, and a violent coverup of a plane crash. It's both intense and low-key at once, something only 'The X-Files' seems capable of accomplishing. It broods.


Up later than expected. Dishes put away.

One of my sourdough starters is quite active and lively. Vibrant. Synonyms. I should make bread with it. The other lags a bit but is clearly alive, just not as dense with yeast, though.

Breakfast for both me and Ms. S., and I kepth the eggs out of it for now, having instead only a good, solid bowl of oats with walnuts and blueberries. We have some packages of tempeh in need of eating, and so that's what's for dinner. Lunch will include a salad, and I'll add some chicken to it. Dinner, with the tempeh, will be a bit more traditional for us, including carrots and rice along with a legume, in this case pinto beans rather than lentils.

Ms. S. has retired to the office for some afternoon reading; after I set up the dough, I may join her, as I'm really enjoying H. Gardner's "The Mind's New Science" (1985, 1987), and I'm just about to start the Computer Science chapter, I believe (having finished Psychology before bed last night).

Last night we followed up 'Millennium' and 'X-Files' with "The Big Lebowski", which we hadn't watched for ages for want of Kahlua; newly Kahluafied, we made small White Russians to go along with some chocolate (World Market's Chili & Lime (dark) chocolate, which I found delicious and Ms. S. found a bit too spicy and strong, I think, though I shouldn't speak for her). We quoted along as usual. This evening we'll probably get in 'Millennium' and 'X-Files', the latter's "Max" completing a two-parter.


"The Mind's New Science" is part of my academic work, at least tangentially, as it relates to my 'psychology' chapter on analogy and aesthetics. It's wonderful background material, a literature review of sorts for me, even though it leaves out the last thirty years of research. The Gestalt and Functional psychology sections are strong enough, and I know the philosophical side of things quite well.

Sunday morning I should get up quite early and work before noon on my academic work. I should work on the Schiller texts I've been reviewing. Then I'll get 'brunch prompt writing' at noon, perhaps relax a bit in the early afternoon, and spend the evening with Ms. S.

It sounds like a plan. I need to keep on track in March.
