Living the Good Life Habit #1

Saturday, March 02, 2013

This week's Shooting Star challenge is to blog daily about new habits we'd like to develop. I have a laundry list of personal improvements, so identifying them is not a problem. Putting plans in place to make it happen can be another story!

My first habit I'd like to reinforce is to eat cleaner. My husband and I don't like to cook, so we still buy alot of frozen, processed foods. I've already made some improvements here by taking the time to study my Spark food plan before going grocery shopping. I probably need to research more recipes to find things that are easy to make, yet flavorful. The trade off with getting rid of processed foods is the preparation and the perception that healthy is not as satisfying.

I'm looking for suggestions for healthy, easy to make recipes that a meat and potatoes guy will love.

Very good habit to work on. It is not easy to set aside time to plan and make healthy meals, but it can be done.

I know, I too, need to stop snacking on high calorie foods.

A few years back I subscribed to Cooking Light and started a collection of husband favorites (also a meat and potato guy). I've since started Pinning favorite recipes and have weaned us off of the meat (but even as I type, he has potatoes going for tonite!). Actually, there is a steak on the grill, as well. Dang!
Good luck with this new habit!

Good blog. I live alone and find that often I don't feel like cooking for myself BUT having lots of staples in the cupboard like frozen veggies and various meats makes it easy to cook something quickly. I also really like to use my crock pot for roasts, stews and soup. Always lots for leftovers - simple is always the best. I sometimes purchase the precut salad mixes and veggie mixes for steaming. I agree just change the side dishes and all is well. emoticon

An easy meat and potates meal is Soup. Add your meat, add potatoes, add frozen veggies, water or stock, season to taste. Voila. Also try starting with V-8 juice or tomato sauce; they give the broth a heartier consistancy, plus they add nutrients as well. (You also don't need as much salt because both already have salt in them )

Best of luck!

Join the Eat to Live team and/ or the Anti-Angiogenic team (both can be found on my sparkpage) - the forums offer a lot of good clean recipes.
And start your day with a green smoothie, they are easy to make, you will love it and get in a lot of leafy greens in a very nice way.

Why not buy frozen vegetables, they make all sorts of ready in 5 minutes blends.

Maybe it'll be a good middle step.

Good luck!

I love to cook but don't have time for it usually , so my cooking is the typw of put the ingredients in the pot , lower the fire and let it there until it's almost burned emoticon . kidding , I think I have a chef guardian angel who helps me save them in the last second.I'm eating mostly grilled meat with steamed veggies(frozen ones are great time savers , but the simple type , not a frozen meal). or I bake the meat plus/minus the veggies in those bags for baking without fats). and sometimes I just steam the meat on top of the veggies in the pan. my sister in law replaced their favorites french fries with baked potatoes wedges , she just places them on the oven grill .

I too have been wanting to eat cleaner. I live in a mother-in-law addition and I cook by a microwave and I also eat out a lot. With clean eatng at least we know for the most part what we are putting into our mouth. I wish you the best on developing your new habit and much success in the challenge!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon June

    Good for you Brenda! emoticon
What's wrong with simple meat and potatoes emoticon I don't enjoy cooking, so everything I make has to be relatively simple. Like an herb crusted roasted pork tenderloin with roasted fingerling potatoes and a kale salad. It always makes enough for two dinners, and then I just change the side dishes. emoticon
